In medical school, your 3rd year and 4th year rotations are done in each specific area ( peds, surgery, internal medicine, emerg med, etc.). During this time they are just following other residents basically learning the ropes and finding out where their interest lies. Then they have a year of internship where they do a rotation in an area that they are sure that they want to start a residency in. They then apply for a residency and that for them is where the real fun lies. So before they get in to the fun... they watch... for years..... they get to do little things and even take call...but they watch...and learnAlso a little note... That 8-12 years experience is their 4 years of med school + their 3 to 6 year residency, depending on their field of interest, and a 2 year fellowship that many doctors do to become experts in their field. And another note... I am not saying that you should have 12 years experience to get into AA. I am saying get some patient care experience.. even if it is being a hospital sitter, you at least have patient oriented..... And I am sure if you did have 12 years experience in anesthesia, you would be excellent...
