Bill: Thinking one's barrels (esp. pattern welded) are safe is not having confidence they are safe (with the load intended) based on an evaluation by someone with the interest, equipment and expertise. I'm confident using my 1906 OE Damascus 16g regularly for recreational skeet, with RST 3/4 oz. loads at 1100 fps with 4600 psi because it has been evaluated, and I know the wall thickness, from the breech to the muzzle.
