Thank you SGT. For the $2K asking price, and having seen it three times now, I am sure the ventilated rib was later installed by Hunter Arms in Fulton. I have no means to take fotos, other than with a 35mm disposable camera, and the Gander Mountain stores apparently are not linked to the internet, as are the many Cabelas Gun Libraries.

I apologize for my ignorance, I may have mis-read the reply from another member of the LCSCA, who seemed to feel this was originally mfg. in Syracuse in aprox. 1895.

Possibly one way to narrow this down is the fact that this gun has selective ejectors, if L.C. Smith guns first were offered with that feature in 1901, then something might be amiss.

The serial number of the gun in question is 1074 and the barrels are marked NP (I assume, Nitro Proofed) and have the serial number double stamped on the one barrel flat.

I think I will buy it, and use some of the Cabelas Hevi-Shot non-toxic loads in it for pass shooting mallards and Canadas. By the by, when did L.C. Smith first offer the Long Range 12 bore shotguns? Again, my deepest appreciation for your insight and advice. I felt that the $475 asking price for the reproduction 1907 catalogue was a bit much, but it is not my nature to haggle. When I see something I like I usually buy it, after doing my homework.

Case in point. I turned down a "deal" on a Rolex GMT Master because a lady friend who works in a high end jewelry store told me the one sure way to verify a genuine Rolex from a 'knock-off' timepiece. There are several concerns that advertise in Gun List for such high grade watches, and the old wisdom of Caveat Empetor rings true. I am 99% sure this older 2E Smith is the 'real deal'. We shall see, shall we not??
