Greg You keep refering to the 2E as a "Syracuse" manufactured gun; I know this confusion is because you are a novice at the moment, but the serial number of the gun you describe would indicate it as being a Fulton manufactured gun. Although it is possible that a very early Smith gun could have been later factory retro-fitted with a ventilated rib (I've personally handled one 5E with an added extra set of factory vent-rib barrels), it is very rare. I would suggest, prior to purchasing this gun, that you make some photos of the barrels showing them on/off the gun, close-ups of the barrel flats, and close views of the top of the rib (first four inches of the breech end); and the same area with the action closed. Afterwards, post those pix here for an opinion; if the gun is not right, we can probably point that out and save you some money on a bad investment. If the barrels are factory correct, this would be an excellent collector find. As to the Smith catalog, examples of that same year catalog have been for sale on eBay many times over the years; it is not extremely rare. To my thinking, the price may be a little on the high side; but that is a decision solely up to your descretion.
