I've heard of "Skylanders." They seem to be the one franchise still making playsets and software for the original Wii.
Then, it seemed like Disney Infinity copied them. I almost wish I had bought one of those sets, with the possible problem that, I probably haven't WATCHED 3/4 of the movies that got turned into characters within the game. The "1.0" version figures also don't seem to be stocked by the "big box" stores (only online).
I think Infinity 1.0 was compatible with Wii. Since they made the jump to 2.0, I guess Wii is left behind. That kind of makes sense. Didn't Wii come out around 2006? I know I was late in buying one, but it's considered pretty "old" technology now.
The thing with those Skylanders and Inifinty toys was that, from what I understand, you HAD to own the figurines to unlock the characters in the associated game.
That takes me to the idea of "Amiibo," where I don't really "get it." If you were to play the demo version of SSB for Wii U, it looked like 48 main characters are available right from the start (or maybe they're "unlockable" along the way). In that sense, I like how you don't HAVE to own certain Amiibo to use those characters. It's just sort of like, what's the point of putting the Amiibo into the game, then? I have no idea how they work once you activate them.
I was kind of seeing them as a "real life" version of the "trophies" you win (which has been a feature in at least the three most recent versions of the Smash console games). I've obviously just started my collection, but it's kind of disappointing to know that I may have already missed out on limited release figures.
From what I can tell, EVERY retailer has Mario. That makes sense. For a few of the other highly stocked characters, I'm not sure why Nintendo chose to flood the market with them: Bowser, DK, Peach. Their individual popularity? Their percentage of use by "professional" SSB players?
I've only made the rounds to four local stores so far. Target and Wal*Mart were actually the most disappointing, which I didn't expect. Well, maybe from Wal*Mart. No offense to them, but I try not to buy items there if I can help it. The weird thing is, their quality for things like board games and action figures had been pretty high recently. My local store looks like it's slipping in quality now. One Target said Link was available for in-sore pickup if you bought him online. At the physical display, he wasn't anywhere that I could see. On the other hand, Best Buy says he's out of stock when you check online, but the store has him. Go figure!
If I wanted to get most of the "Wave 1" figures, I'm not sure if that will happen. Mario was pretty easy. It seems like Little Mac, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer aren't in stock anywhere. Samus shows up in stock some places, or you'd be able to buy her online. Fox disappoints me the most. I love the "Star Fox" game series, and it seems like he's a pretty powerful character in the SSB series of games, so why would Nintendo make him a limited release? That's why I question how much of this product line is about using the Amiibos with the actual game, and what part is about trying to make certain characters rare?
They just released the new lineup that goes with "Mario Party 10." I made sure to get that Luigi, since the pose from his SSB statue looks ridiculous. I'm interested in the newer Yoshi, too, since I felt the same way (silly SSB pose). Yoshi seems to be rarer, but I saw him at Toys 'R Us. They actually had ALL of those figures, with the exception of Mario (who I think is either packed in with the game, not released yet, or the gold version is exclusive to Wal*Mart). There was a sign saying customers can only buy one of each. At least one store seems to care about "scalping"!
So, that's kind of my story. I would definitely want to get all of the good guys from the Zelda series (not Toon Link, though). I've been passing them up so far. Fox, Rosalina, and Gold Mario are the three where I may not get them unless I'm really lucky, or they get released again. I'm always nervous to buy online, since I like to examine all of the boxes in way too much detail. I mean, some of them are glued off center. I settled for one cardboard backing that has surface scratches (it shouldn't matter if I ever end up opening the package, but still - things just aren't packed very well anymore). The main thing is to be able to see the character and if there are any obvious paint flaws. Most of the ones I've seen are at least pretty good in that regard.
Other than all my other commentary, I just wonder how long they're going to take in releasing all of the SSB characters, or if all 48+ will get made into an Amiibo? It seems like Palutena, R.O.B, and two of the Pokemon aren't even listed yet.
