I've probably been following Nintendo Inquirer (Amiibo Inquirer recently merged with that site) too closely:
http://nintendoinquirer.com/2015/05/the-black-amiibo-friday-survival-guide/
I'm not sure when our local Wal*Mart opens. It could be a 24 hour store. We're not really in a heavily populated area. From what I saw there, the shelf is almost bare, and I didn't ask the employees about a restock.
The general idea seems to be, there are people at the register of the electronics/game department, and they haven't put new stock on the shelf (probably to avoid a crazy rush or people trampling each other).
Target was opening at 8 AM, so I went to a store that's one of the larger kind (a blue and a green entrance). The "Fire Emblem" characters went right away, which most people seemed to expect. I think Wario was soon after that, but mostly due to low stock. There were a bunch of Charizard, Pac-Man, Silver Mario, and Jigglypuff (only at Target). I'd say Jigglypuff had the most stock overall. Charizard was gone before my place in line (wasn't really looking to collect him/it). I asked for Silver Mario, not knowing it was the last one. Then the mom behind me in line mentioned how he was on her list. I'm not sure if anything else sold out after my spot in line. I got Mario and Pac-Man. There was also "Splatoon" (the game, plus a toy watergun promotion), and those amiibo (I think the boy and girl come separately, and another pack combines them with a squid). That's a brand new franchise and didn't seem to be selling out.
Best Buy opened at 10 AM. I went to the local one, not knowing what to expect. Nobody was lining up (none of the current wave are exclusive to Best Buy). Online rumors have been talking about a restock of MetaKnight for sure (exclusive to Best Buy at the time he released), and Marth was supposed to restock "in May," but where?
A few guys asked someone about the amiibo. The employees brought out a cardboard box. One dude grabbed the only Lucina ("Martha") and Robin. The rest were the few I had from Target, or ones that don't pique my interest. They had silver Mario, too, so maybe that mom could check another store?
At Toys R Us, I think I hit a low. A guy in the parking lot was like, "Are you buying amiibo?" He already had a phone conversation going with someone about GameStop (Ness is their exclusive character from this wave). He showed me that he already bought a Greninja. He claimed to have "five siblings." Basically, could I buy him another Greninja, due to the limit of 1 per customer? I took a $20 bill and found myself helping this guy. The women at the store claimed Marth was gone. I could actually see one in a blue basket, but they explained how it was promised to someone else who lined up and got a ticket. Fair enough. At least I know Marth EXISTS! Now I'm just wondering if I helped a scalper. I mean, two of one particular figure doesn't sound excessive, but it is a store exclusive.
Beyond this wave, I don't know if I'd do it all again. Palutena interests me the most, but Pit was already a "unicorn" in terms of his stock and rarity. I think she's only useful in the Smash Brothers game so far. If wave 3 is over and won't be coming back, then I probably missed Mega Man. I've seen a stray Sonic here or there. Fox and Rosalina are probably the two that I'd buy if they ever came back in stock.
For now, I guess I need to do something besides obsess over amiibo.
