Legally, CRNA's can administer Nurse Anesthesia Independently. But, this does not change the fact that patients are sicker than ever before and need a DOCTOR who understands the MEDICAL conditions of these patients.
Since CRNA's did NOT go to Medical School they are ignorant of what they do not Know. In this case, ignorance is down right dangerous for the ASA 3.5-4 Patient. At my institution, we offered to leave the Medical Center and allow the CRNA's to practice alone. This would save the institution a great deal of money. The Surgeons, Administrators and the majority of our CRNA's knew this would have disastrous consequences. So, we receive a subsidy from the hospital. Other Groups have the Hospital employ the CRNA's to reduce overhead; but, this still costs the facility a great deal of money.
AA's can do just what a CRNA can but with the understanding that Mid-Level providers should have a KNOWLEDGEABLE DOCTOR to help out. The AANA's stance is simply not in the best interest of patient care. Why can't you see that? Or, should a Surgeon's Nurse Practitioner be the one operating on you?
The AANA will continue its misinformation program to the public. The AA's represent a restoration of the true intent of the Mid-Level provider.
