That 3 1/4 drams equiv. 1 1/4 ounce of shot was a very popular load for years. Still is. Note the shells for Fred were put up in a 3-inch case for exta wadding, not that the load was any heavier then could be had in a 2 3/4 inch case. 3 drams equiv and 1 1/4 ounces was avalable in the 2 5/8 inch case too.
The Super-X, Nitro-Express, Hi-Power 3 3/4 dram Equiv. 1 1/4 ounce of shot load has been on the market since 1922, so I think a 1949 gun sure ought to be able to handle it. I've been using that load, when necessary, in my Fox doubles for over 40 years with no ill effects, and they were probably getting them from previous owners before I came along. To be easy on me and my old doubles I use my 7/8 ounce, 1200 fps, 6300 psi, reloads for high volume shooting at clay targets.
