I do remember the picture of Queen Elizabeth going bare headed to her daughter's coronation. She was wearing her crown when the ceremony began. I don't think I have a picture of her on her way to her own coronation. There is a picture of Queen Alexandra with King Edward VII in which he is wearing the cap of maintenance and she is bare headed. That may be a pre-coronation picture, and I'll add it to my flickr set.

Edit: Perhaps the reason that Queen Elizabeth (QM) did not wear the Diadem was that, even though Queens Alexandra and Mary wore it at times, it was considered a monarch's emblem. It is modeled on, or perhaps made from, the base of the crown King George IV wanted for his coronation, with flowers representing the parts of the UK instead of fleur de lys. He was talked out of that. But the Diadem has become a quasi-official head piece during the current reign.
