Thank you, Nellie, you've established that the tradition of wearing the Diamond Diadem to coronations belongs to monarchs only. Even though Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary wore it at times, I can imagine Queen Mary eventually saying "We queens have our crowns. We'll leave the Diadem for Princess Elizabeth when she becomes Queen." Perhaps the queens need a cap of maintenance! But it wouldn't be good for hairdos.
The photo of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth is interesting for two reasons. One is that she had worn her crown in the carriage on the way to the Opening of Parliament. http://www.flickr.com/photos/digitaluser/8368381217/in/photostream/lightbox/
The other is that the movie The King focused on the king's fears about his coronation, because of his stammer. But, although they both appear uncomfortable, Queen Elizabeth looks more nervous in the picture of their carriage ride to their Coronation!
