Not really true. B96 was competing with WBMX in 1986. B96 was dance heavy but more Urban. Urban at that time was very much dance to begin with.
B96 made statements to the trades that they wanted to be in between Q101 and WBMX. They were ignoring Z95 at the time and the Q101 reference really made no sense.
That is one thing I disagree with the WIKI I posted above. If Sal reads this, he can chime in as he knows the WBMX history well. He also posted an air check once of WBMX > 1986, listening to it, was minus the rock pop tunes heard on B96, them and WBMX were sharing formatics, production and many song titles at the time. Listening to the air check WBMX was uptempo like a CHR, jingles (unheard of on Urban stations) and fast tempo jocks.
You are correct, when WBMX went Urban AC, B96 stepped it up and took the mantle, especially with the mixes.
