I was listening to DBR in an office setting and those around me are not minimum wage types. It was an awkward quick drop of volume and X on the close button. Like you said and I said, no shade on the dude. He is trying. But he is not a programmer, this is a hobby for him. Granted times have changed, it is no longer terrestrial radio rules, but still, people stream during office hours, keep it clean.
If I was him, I would scope the time for DBR. It can be 86 - 98 when they dropped most dance. It can be further back to disco as B96 was not shy playing disco in regular rotation in the early 90s. The Pop stuff? Dunno. B96 played the pop cuts where Hot & Power played the Pop remixes, often done in house. If it was me, I would not play the Hip Hop edgier stuff. Why? Take the Energy route. Superserve the listener with what they cant hear anywhere else. They will be rabid loyal P1's. They can hear Hip Hop throwbacks everywhere. Get people to tune in and NOT leave and head to your competition having to sample several sources to hear what they want.
I seen Tim Spinnin in a dance bar one night in the late 90s. People were giving him shit for "Selling out" to hip hop. I told them, seriously? He is trying to keep his job! Tim is an awesome down to earth dude. Julian is nice too, he was top notch when he ran Jumpin Music on Grand Ave (I still have most vinyl I bought from him).
B96 flushed the dance out and then BCR brought on KISS, then Clear Channel did the same, B96 lost its dance audience. Most went to Energy. They had > 4 share 18 - 34 that nearly vaporized overnight and did not end up on B or KISS. (The dawn of online consumption). Even Chris Shebel the PD recommended people download music from "WinMX" the file sharing program, the last night they were on the air. Majority of Hip Hop followers at that time could not get down with Dance music. One was street thug tough, the other was considered fluffy, wet and popular in the gay scene. B96 made a choice, it wasn't dance. If it was compatible they would have intermixed both types of music.
Good times. Thanks for the great discussion. I appreciate it.
