Why would the school board choose to close the school in this neighborhood verses all the other neighborhoods in Granite City? I have a theory. Dr. Mark Eavenson (brother of recently retired Brad Eavenson of GCSD9)previously owned the building that now houses the church at Maryville Road and Stratford Lane. He sold that building to the GC Board of Education. The board of education leases that building, which is directly adjacent to Worthen School, to the church that is there now. Why would our board decide to close that school over all the other schools in Granite City. My theory, future real estate development, that is why. The property is butted up to Worthen Park, and sits amid some of the nicest homes in this city. Mark Eavenson was an investor in the Donna Lynne Legacy development. He personally paid residents whose property bordered the development to annex into Granite City so that development could move forward, under the Granite City ordinances and taxing body. I predict in five years the school board will vote to sell that property to a developer whose investors might include an Eavenson. If the property is not sold under this particular theory, I would bet my bottom dollar it will still be sold to a real estate developer at a hefty, hefty price for apartments, condominiums or single family dwellings. Mark my word. Why else shutter up one of the newest school buildings in the district? It sure has nothing to do with it having the smallest number of classrooms. Why not close down Prather which sits three blocks from the most recent murder in Granite City (on Logan Street). I submit my theory for your review.
