We need to first inform the parents about what is being taught
Or maybe get ssome to care. It would seem to me that parents now have more chances to be informed than ever If they apply themselves. Does the district not have something called Skyway or something like that? Do they not still have parent conferences? Don't most of the teachers have e-mail? I'm afraid the kids whose parents aren't "connected" via today's technology don't care enough to help their kids.
high risk for being unsuccessful . Is that not the job of special ed, testing for the "underachievers"?
Secondly, although Sylvan and other facilities offer some free tutoring, it is not offered to ALL students
So you would propose spending more money for after school tutoring programs? I believe, if memory serves, the school offers tutoring to students at the high school during study hall. In addition there have been news stories about the district, through outside sources, already offering after school help for all students because of this NCLB structure.
many of the buildings in the morning have unlimited access in the doors that the students enter. Which means that anyone not just students can come in.
Well, that's an interesting point and one I'm not sure has a good answer. At the high school for instance how would they lock down a building that has so many entrances and still allow for orderly entrance and exit? I know Mr. Waters at the middle school has installed security entrances so students and parents can only come in one door and I think most grade schools are that way too. I would hope and pray most schools monitor their entrances but in reality it's a public building and doors can be pushed open from the inside allowing anyone to enter.
The "boiler plate" answers that most candidates give, " we need change", "money should be spent more wisely", "it takes a village" are really meaningless unless there are merited plans to back them up.
The board has at least three former teachers on it now. Those folks know about schooling and parenting. It's a different world now. Parents in some cases simply don't give a crap.
I still like your credentials Ms. Cuvar but frankly I need more substance than the general boiler plate. Tell me how you fix the economic mess the district is in. Do you vote for layoffs? Will you allow a strike before giving raises? Will you cut athletic progrmas before academics? I asked another candidate and he ignored the question. I'll vote for anyone who gives me the answer including yourself. Good luck.
