don and opi - how was that clever or a "direct hit?" EVERYONE in public education is not making profit. our school system COSTS us money and brings in NOTHING. who pays for it? all of us. do some of us pay for it even though we do not have ANY children? yes...because our country has deemed an education something valuable and essential to the nation being strong. you do not like public education? go to a country that does not provide one and see what a difference it makes. i consider a human life pretty valuable. why invest in american people, providing them education and training, just to lose that investment because they could not receive access to healthcare. - now that i have addressed the children here, i can actually address metalhedz who gave a respect-worthy response... At what point do insurance companies cut people off? At a point specified in a prearranged contract. If the government takes over the means of health care, who gets to decide when you get cut off? A bureaucrat? i do not think insurance companies SHOULD be able to cut people off. why have insurance and pay into a system for years just so you can be dropped when you actually need the services of that system. if providing healthcare coverage is not profitable - and to some seems lacking in morality - then why keep it privatized? let the government and the people assume the burden of caring for our health. perhaps then we would be more likely to live healthier lives... would some people pay into a system their whole life and use much less care than others? yes...but the question is - is this something that as a country we think is important to the quality of life and strength of this nation? i think it is. And contrary to your claims, Nobody is getting sent home when they need care. and nobody is being really being bankrupted just because of medical debt. i never claimed that people were denied care - i claimed people were denied coverage or access to insurance - and can not afford it otherwise on their own. this is a portion of the LEADIDNG CAUSE OF PERSONAL BANKRUPTCY that article is 2009 - but it has been a trend for some time now and any research into this topic will find you the same answers. it is a problem our NATION faces...so why not work as a nation to resolve it? or at least make it better... all had private insurance ...key word there... Our health care system is amazing, it's people buying xBoxs, when they should have made a trip to the doctor or bought insurance that mess it up. People not taking care of themselves is there fault. see if you ignore the facts and the truth - then your points make sense. people are bankrupted by medical expenses - this is not a choice or a matter of just trying harder - this is not a matter of caring enough to tend to one's own health... this is simply about the fact that people can not afford our "amazing" healthcare. if a lamborghini dealership opened up in Granite city, it would provide amazing 250,000$ cars but no one here could afford them. a dealership with tons of economy cars and affordable models would do much more business and provide a better service to the people of granite city. if our country increased our investments in higher education and science, the public sector could lead in innovation and researching new technology - much like it already is - and doctors could focus more on providing care at more affordable and realistic prices. i just think healthcare - much like education - could be better if as a nation we committed excellence and proper funding. I know it is hard for you understand somebody being motivated by anything that is not the good of the collective, but the meager 3% profit margins most health insurance companies make is barely enough to stay afloat as it is. They do provide a good product to a large number of consumers. Absolutely not. Obesity, most heart disease, diabetes, cirrhosis..... Are the fault of person who has them. It should not be my responsibility to contribute to the rehabilitation of some who's condition was easily preventable by them exercising, and using good judgment on what they put into there bodies. wow. most ignorant thing i have ever read. in fact most people's health is pre-determined by genetics. i think our nation should do better to subsidize natural and organic foods - healthier foods rather than lil debbies and doritos...but thus is capitalism; consumers have choices and can spend their money how they wish. but some people have thyroid problems - heart disease, as is the case with my family, is a genetic thing which took my grandfathers life in his mid-thirties on a softball diamond...healthy and fit man with no health issues other than heart disease from genetics. i never mentioned those on welfare - i am talking about our nation as a whole. but since you mention it - many young kids from impoverished homes do fail to get the nutrition they need and are usually less healthy than middle class or upper class homes. that is not a choice - it is simply a sad reality when considering their diet which consists largely of ramen noodles and kool-aid (both are extremely cheap and is a perfect recipe for diabetes.) We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. yeah i condensed it assuming you knew what i was referring to. i interpret that as - we are all created equal and have the inalienable right of life and liberty...so regardless of your income or healthiness - you can get access to healthcare - something our founding fathers had no concept of in their time. liberty - no part of the word - suggests "fending for one's self" - the term means freedom insofar that it does not impede upon the freedom of others. contributing taxes to help americans is not impeding on your freedom - it is not stealing from you ... it is the right thing to do. EVERYONE should have access to affordable care that does not cost an arm and a leg.
