Our teacher at the time explained about the word and about the social climate at the time the book was written. She explained how it was used and why it was not acceptable to use it. I loved that book, and my parent's lessons to me about racism was validated by my teacher. I say let Mr. Twain's words stand as they were written. Agreed 100% with everything in here. It just needs to be explained. I'm one of those people who will let my child see R-rated movies when they're old enough (depending on the content) if I'm there to put it in context.
