You know, even if the shortage was somewhat alleviated, I still don't think that CRNA/AA salaries would dip much. My reasoning is similar to the concept behind the recent continual surge in pharmacists' salaries; a pharmacist friend of mine states that, while salaries have increased, so has the publicly perceived value of their work. This is also evident in the national overhaul of the B.S. Pharmacy degree to that of a doctorate. Over the last several years, pharmacists have allied themselves with MDs/DOs -- as doctors that specialize in pharmaceuticals. I think the same concept applies to CRNAs/AAs; they have firmly rooted themselves as vital members of anesthesia practice. Accordingly, their job duties entail many/all of those held by anesthesiologists. The public has also come to regard CRNAs and, to a lesser extent, AAs, as "senior" healthcare practitioners. The only obstruction preventing AAs from achieving the same level of patient regard is awareness. I also think that these practitioners should, as Dave J mentioned previously, declare a more singular, specialized title for themselves that drops the "assistant" addendum. I do believe that CRNAs'/AAs' salaries will fluctuate in correlation with anesthesiologists' earnings. Consider this: NPs are typically regarded as family practitioners' right-hand men; they undertake many of the same duties as their MD/DO employer. The average NP's salary in North America is approximately $78,000/yr. -- or, roughly more than half of the average North American income for family practitioner doctors. Anesthesiologists and CRNAs/AAs share a proportionally similar salary ratio. That being said, I don't think it is a healthy idea to edge anesthesiologists too far out of the picture. After all, if their role as medical practitioners is significantly reduced in the near future, then what earnings precedent will serve as a foundation for CRNA/AA salaries?
