Charlie and Jim are correct. In the past, I discussed with Tom Armbrust having some early 1900s shells pressure tested. He'd already tried to do so, and found such inconsistent ignition that the results were unreliable. His opinion was that the primers degrade first and the fibre wads and paper case could harden with time and increase pressures.
