There have been discussions in the past and there is one current on the PGCA Forum discussing Parkers long range guns-as well as Fox HE "Super Foxes" and the Long Range 3 inch WildFowl LC Smith Guns.
On Page 12-13 and page 173 of Brophy's LC Smith book-there are specific references to 90-yard plus shooting in the Far East. The Hunter catalogue of 1924-{after further development of Super X-3 inch 12 Ga shells}talks of 75-80 yard shot effectivesness. LTCOL Charles Askins said "that the HE Grade Fox could best the LC Smith by 10 yards, generally. Hmmmmm. Football field shots on geese and turkeys in the 1920s-30's. With witnesses ?. Using BB shot.
I have an HE SuperFox in 3-inch. And a Long Range WildFowl LC Smith; along with two 3 in M-12 Heavy Duck guns. I need to start handloading my shells better... Are any of you folks having regular kills at 70 yards with any of your doubles? My best turkey was at 55 yards with copper plated #4 turkey loads from a 1925 Super Fox. Maybe I need to get another LC Smith Long Range and another Parker and do some testing on paper targets at extreme ranges. (Maybe they did'nt have wounded game in the 1920s-or they had better shells AND retrievers.) Read page 12-13.
As Jack O'Connor used to say -"Salt with the figures".
