As of now, I can't play the game yet! One of the quirky things is how there are three software versions, and they're sort of incompatible with each other. The "campaign mode" stories from the 2013 game are missing from versions 2.0 and 3.0 (which add their own campaigns), but Toy Box mode is supposed to be common to every game, and every character made up to this point can supposedly play in Toy Box 3.0.
I'm kind of confused about the difference between the "play sets" (games based on a single franchise), and then the Toy Box. I've seen a playthrough with a castle and space to run around. Maybe that's the Toy Box? But I don't know how it could be fun unless there's a way to spawn enemies or create your own missions.
I just want to be able to play a bunch of the story modes from all three games, and possibly pick a different hardware system for each game. I think only the original disc (now considered to be "1.0") was made for Wii. Since that released in 2013, it might be on XBox 360 and PS3 (neither of which I own), but not on XBox One or PS4. I believe Wii U was released early enough to have a version of all three games.
So, my collection to this point isn't that impressive. I did see the movie "Tangled." Rapunzel is a pretty neat character. Her figure still has blonde hair, even though it's a spoiler to say her appearance changes by the end of the movie events. I was holding off on some of the other characters from 1.0. Woody is kind of familiar, but it's been a while since I watched the original "Toy Story" movie (dating back to when I was in high school?!!). I know they've made sequels, and I forget if I've seen those. I also have four "power discs." I'm not even sure what "powers" they give. One looks like the ring they throw in Tron. One is a flamingo with possibly Alice's picture (from "Alice in Wonderland"). One could be the sky or the ground from "Frozen." I'm forgetting the fourth.
From the starter set, I've actually seen TWO of those movies/franchises, although it's been a while. I mostly remember "Pirates of the Caribbean" because of the Will character. He likes Keira Knightley (good taste). Jack Sparrow is a weirdo, though. The sequel seemed to be about Davy Jones. Then I forget if there are three or four films total. The fourth (if it exists) must've come out recently and after the story arc from the first three seemed complete all by itself.
"The Incredibles" is some kind of animated movie about a super hero family. I know I rented it back when Blockbuster stores still existed. I'm not sure how memorable it was, though.
With the "Monsters, Inc." guy, I'd be clueless. I believe he was voiced by John Goodman in the movie, but that's about the extent of my knowledge.
I think, the way the game is set up, you sort of NEED to complete a large percentage of the playset mode before you unlock new "toys," which are then useful in the Toy Box world. I'm kind of hoping that the story modes are fun, and not just an excuse to collect items.
In the Wii version (how I'm planning to play 1.0), I've heard that the playsets may be smaller or incomplete (not enough horsepower or memory in the Wii). It shouldn't bug me that they're limited to one player. Then, there's some quirk about the Toy Box (it may just be a collection of Boxes they've created for the Wii), plus lack of online play (if anybody is still playing 1.0 after just two years).
I heard that digital versions of the game are available for Wii U, so I might replay 1.0 at some point, to see what I missed. The playthrough I watched on YouTube was the Wii U version with HD graphics. It seems like that would be the cheap alternative to getting doubles of the figures, the base, and other game pieces, through buying another starter set. You can actually buy individual figures of Mr. Incredible, Jack, and Sulley, but they're the "crystal" variants that change the paint job and even the in-game appearance to something that doesn't impress me. Even then, I don't think the figures come with the play set piece (but it should be reusable from the Wii game).
I'm probably most excited about 3.0, if I ever get that far. I'd definitely want to try playing that on PlayStation 4 (not purchased yet). Besides about 10-15 characters from "Star Wars," I know they've already released Sam Flynn and Quorra from "Tron Legacy." That was a strange movie. I got hyped up to watch it, not knowing much about the original. Basically, a programmer invents his own world, and then enters that world. I think I've heard this in the Bible before? That was sort of the end of the similarity, though. This creator didn't know why new life was appearing in his world, and he feared his own creations, which mostly hated him (maybe not too different from atheism, but I doubt God is fearful of humans). In addition to them there's finally a regular Mickey. Peter Pan is supposed to be released in another wave.
You know the other crazy thing? Most of the Disney Infinity product line is in good or high stock at pretty much EVERY Toys R Us, Wal*Mart, Target, and Best Buy. Nintendo amiibo only had a few noticeable restocks (I saw Inkling Girl today - Inkling Boy probably sold out, and no multipacks with the squid).
So, that's what I know about this phenomenon as of today. I hope to maybe reply with some updates. There has to be a reason they've sold a billion dollars of these toys, right?
