What I found out about the Hall of Heroes is how the Wii version probably doesn't have any statues at all. There are kind of engraved pictures of each figure on the wall inside a recessed area. At level 1, I think you get a red ribbon. Around level 5, I believe they give you the blue medal that looks like something from the military. The third reward seems to be gold branches and leaves above the person's head. I don't know if there's a final upgrade if you reach the cap of level 15 for each character. I'm actually trying to get all of the characters to similar levels.
The level up system still feels a little limited, and it almost feels too easy to reach level 10 or above just by going through a play set. I don't know if that's what they were trying for, or if there should be a way to need to power up your character in the Toy Box mode even after you clear a play set. Rapunzel is probably at the highest level of my four characters, and she can't even be used in a play set, so I'm not sure how she leveled up so fast (mostly from playing the mini-games repeatedly and winning silver or gold medals).
My thoughts on some of the play sets: "The Incredibles" felt way too short. I'm wondering if they tried to divide up multiple missions among five playable characters. The other play sets I've attemtped only have three characters who are able to complete them. There's a weird inconsistency between how missions work between play sets, and even within the same play set. What I mean is, in "Monsters University" (not the name of the movie it represents, which confused me at first), I noticed right away how you had two options when a nonplayable character told you about a mission. The minus sign was like saying OK, plus giving you guidance with the on screen compass (green arrow). The A button was just saying OK with no guidance, meaning you had to pay attention to a cut scene or know the map really well. I'm not sure which is better. I kind of feel like the compass makes things easy, but lots of times, you wouldn't even know where to find something. Then I reached a stage of the game where the arrow comes up automatically! "Toy Story in Space" (also not a movie title) seems to just have the OK response and then you automatically get the arrow.
I'm not sure which is my favorite play set yet. "The Incredibles" felt like it had the best combat, but I'll probably explain why when I get to the differences between characters. Unfortunately, that meant a low variety of missions or a bunch of repetition. When they did try to throw in some variety, it was only different in the sense of "guard this vehicle," but you were still using close combat (except once you bought a vehicle). In "Monsters University," what I've seen is that the missions are somewhat different, but then you repeat the same type of mission too many times. Like, it's kind of neat to play paint ball, except when the only thing that changes is maybe the time limit, or needing four more kills than what you just did a minute ago. With "Toy Story in Space," I've barely played it (maybe 90 minutes). So far, it's had some kind of neat platform elements, and then they added a bunch of combat (sometimes at close range, and other times with a laser gun).
I'm not sure if it's really a kid's game, only because I've struggled with a series of the "Monsters University" missions. You're supposed to be "stealth," but it's not exactly James Bond where there's plenty of good cover and the enemies go away. The goal is to walk up behind a guard while their back is turned, "scare" them, and then I've been carrying those guys to another part of the stage (assuming that other guards might notice someone unconscious and be alerted to you). I think all I actually did was to create these death traps, where there are about five guys huddled in the same place, and they have a 360 degree view, making it impossible to sneak up on them. Somehow, they can capture you and force you to start a mission all over again, losing your previous progress. The game actually locked up or glitched in the middle of failing that mission several times.
In terms of the characters and distinguishing between them, I think I got kind of upset today by using Buzz Lightyear. I believe the sequence that I've played the characters has been Mr. Incredible, Rapunzel, then Sulley and Buzz. With Mr. Incredible, he's mostly a melee player, and there's actually some kind of development or variety in his melee moves (a regular three hit combo, a pop-up/uppercut ...). His alternate/B trigger move is sort of a ranged attack where he pounds the ground.
With Rapunzel, she started with a decent melee attack. I know she at least has the three hit combo. I forget about a pop-up combo or other variations. Her ranged attack has LOTS of range, but only in a straight line. She's actually pretty balanced, and I've developed an attack pattern of Z (melee) plus B, or Z, Z, and then add the ranged attack when the enemy is stunned.
Sulley doesn't feel like a melee fighter AT ALL. His Z attack is only one hit, where you kind of slide and knock the other person down by leading with your shoulder (there's probably a simpler name for that move). His B attack is to "scare." Outside of his playset, I think it just knocks enemies back a few steps (from the front). There's also damage he must score that way, because about four roars can defeat an average enemy. I haven't really been able to use the scare tactic the way you do it in the play set (tiptoe from behind and then B), which would probably have a similar "scare" effect. I'm pretty sure Sulley can also pick up huge enemies like droids, which only Mr. Incredible was doing at first.
Finally, I got to play as Buzz Lightyear today. I pressed Z and ... shoulder charge (same as Sulley). I remember from learning about programming how it can be much easier to give two "objects" (or characters) the same behavior and save hundreds of lines of code. I guess that kind of bummed me out, though. I mean, how many Disney characters do you really think of as beating someone up with punches or kicks? I'm surprised Rapunzel does what she does (albeit with a frying pan), but at least it's a neat animation. I think I kind of spoiled Woody from that same play set by watching his video. Jack Sparrow with his sword seems to fight the same as the enemies who have a sword. I'm planning to save him until last (still have Wreck-It Ralph and Jessie to go). Buzz's B attack is really weird to start. It's called a "Pixar ball" (???). Basically, it just looks like a small toy with a star logo, and he throws it like a bomb or a grenade. It doesn't seem to explode or anything, yet it does cause some kind of damage or breaks apart crates and crystals in the environment.
For Wreck-It Ralph, I think I've already been using his B ranged attack in mini-games. Jessie's packaging mentions the Pixar balls. I'm trying not to spoil Jack's moves. Some of the load screens kind of hint what he can equip on the B button, but I'm not sure if he starts with those items.
The enemies seem to behave like the characters, so after a while, they might start blending together or overlapping (although I hope the game stays interesting). Like, the guards who seem to come from Rapunzel's kingdom have a similar melee move and a straight line ranged attack (although it seems to move slower than hers). The sword guards I kind of mentioned could be spoilers of Captain Jack Sparrow. Buzz has faced two different kinds of robots, which actually WASN'T spoiled by the mini-games (only the red type). The differences seem to be in ranged attacks versus being more hands-on. Mr. Incredible was always fighting droids, though.
Then there's the mystery of the "Toy Box." That's the mode you can always load into, even if you don't put a play set crystal on the USB base. From what I can tell, the area with the castle is the central "hub." You can't build anything there, at least in the Wii version. I'm feeling like there was once this sort of blank or empty toy box where I was able to create something from scratch, but maybe not. From the "hub," you have to warp to five or six different kinds of toy boxes. I think the reason for that is because only a subset of toys is allowed to go each place. I keep playing the lottery game to win new toys, and they will tell you it's available in one box, but apparently not the rest. I may want to make a cool rail slide course that twists around a race track or between buildings, but those are all different boxes.
My building box is probably the most developed. I banked up enough spins to win cool stuff like that rock from "The Lion King," where the monkey guy holds up baby Mufasa. Some of those pieces were a disappointment. Scrooge's money bin has a button to pop open the top. So, you jump in, and you're standing on piles of gold coins, but not interacting with them. Then you climb a pole to get back out (or else you'd be stuck).
My racing box started with a simple track they built. I was able to win parts to expand it into the sky with this really steep ramp and some banked turns.
The dynamics box is supposed to be where you blow stuff up. All I can build there right now is a stack of wood blocks. Then there's an "egg," which I don't know what that does. There's also a beach ball. What I did there instead was to go up as high as possible, build a floating island, and then I gave Rapunzel the glide pack. She ran off the island and did some "skydiving" back to the ground. That was pretty neat and gave me an idea of what's possible, but I still feel like it's hard to make your own games in a mode with no rules and only a few tutorials (a couple of which I haven't attempted yet!).
So, that was kind of the last two play sessions. I don't know who might end up being my favorite character. Rapunzel is pretty much in the lead right now. I'm also thinking about how this is only the Disney version of the game. In 2.0, they start to give you Marvel heroes, and that might be a little more interesting. I mean, Hulk (who I probably won't buy) could be similar to Mr. Incredible, but there should be some neat things that only Spider-Man or Iron Man can do. "Star Wars" in 3.0 might be the most repetitve, if only because there are so many Jedi, who you know are all swordsmen/women, and then maybe they use a small set of force powers. Characters like Han and Leia are posed with guns, so I'd expect them to be shooters. It's hard to imagine what that could be like when you're able to mix 1.0 with 2.0 and 3.0 in a multiplayer toy box.
Oh, ... the only other thing was power discs. I finally used a couple of them. They do show up in the Hall of Heroes, but the Wii version must be really pixelated. So far, I've only used a "buff" (higher odds of becoming invincible for a few seconds) and a "skydome." Even after I took away the skydome disc, the sky stayed with that theme. Things tend to look a whole lot better with a skydome, maybe because the default one makes it seem like the land itself is floating in the air. This was the scenery from "Frozen," which I haven't seen in movie form. Basically, lots of snowy mountains in the background, like in the Parmount logo. They also seem to change the music to go with that sky. If it stays that way even without the disc, how would you ever change it back to the default? I have a guess, but they don't make that very intuitive.
