My initial reaction is mostly positive. For some reason, I inserted the game disc, and the Wii wanted to perform a system update. Maybe it wouldn't natively have the driver for the USB port to recognize the base where you put all the figures and the discs? YouTube and Hulu also got added to my Wii Menu, which didn't make much sense.
When you start the game, it shows a really neat cutscene. Based on a Wii U playthrough I saw online, this one only shows the first few minutes and it's not interactive.
You end up in this place that looks like it's floating somewhere. I think they consider that the "Toy Box." There's the Disney/Cinderella(?) castle in the middle, some barrels to break (coins and sparks are usually inside), and other items kind of spread out. You can drive a car. You can equip a blaster. I won "spins" that can unlock new toys. The first spin activated some kind of soldier or guard from the "Aladdin" franchise. He seems to spawn somewhere in the middle of the field all on his own. I tried to run him over with the car. This is a kid's game, right? That seems kind of violent!
Using the "play set" piece, I loaded up story mode for "The Incredibles." I had spoiled a bunch of that content by watching a playthrough online. The controls are kind of awkward (at least to me), because your melee moves are the Z button on the nunchuk attachment. They say you have to use a nunchuk and remote to play this game. I kind of wish the Classic Controller was an alternate configuration. If there's a way to reassign the buttons, I haven't seen it yet.
The missions come a little bit fast and furious. Is that because kids have a short attention span? I felt like all I had to do was reach one particular area (a green "compass" arrow keeps showing you the way), punch something, and then there's confetti to show that you completed a goal. I can't tell if the missions are "linear," or if you can pick different ones at various points. There's a pattern emerging where you kind of need to talk to a nonplayable character to activate new missions. It's just weird how not all of them are available to talk all the time (you need to see if they have an exclamation point first).
This version is supposed to be more limited in the play set mode. I haven't seen any missions or areas left out yet. It looks like they programmed it in a certain way, though. You'll reach a bridge or another logical separation between areas, and you're blocked from running forward. Instead, you have to go to a green arrow and ask for the next area to load.
Certain other things seem quirky. I was able to buy a car. You have to go to certain signs to respawn the car at your location, or you can just bring up a "Toy Shop" menu and spawn the car again. There are some holograms that let you go to the mission and toy shop menus, but those are ALWAYS available from pressing the + button. It seems kind of redundant.
You can wear a backpack or equip a blaster. What I've noticed is that, with either of those options, you lose the ability to melee or defend yourself. For the blaster, it kind of makes sense (you can at least be doing ranged attacks without the melee moves). For the pack, it's like you're just stuck trying to fly around and open capsules. Meanwhile, it seems as if the stage is always spawning new enemies.
I'm not sure if it counts as a "glitch," but I got stuck in a training tutorial. After pressing every button besides home, I couldn't cancel out of something that I kept failing. They only told you the instructions once, which barely stayed on the screen for two seconds, and then it's expecting you to execute that move. Every time you fail, you "Try again," with no instructions. I just went back to the Wii Menu without being able to save first.
I wouldn't say the combat parts of the game are "boring" (a complaint from some reviews). It's just hard to see a difference between the button presses that activate certain moves. You can tap Z to do a regular punch, which leads into a combo with more taps. You have to hold it to do your uppercut/"pop-up" move. Where I got stuck, it sounded like you have to hold, release, hold, but it was viewing those like some form of the other two attacks. The B button also does a power move (ground smash in this case), which seems like it belongs with the Z button. If you're wearing a backpack, Z does something different.
Over time, I hope I learn the controls. There don't seem to be many hard puzzles in the story mode yet. The trickiest thing so far was climbing ledges or poles. I'm not sure if it's just this character, but he looks like a monkey or a gorilla when he hangs or jumps up to higher ledges.
With the actual figure, I'm not sure what happened to Mr. Incredible's back. He has a mark or a smudge that's a different color from his suit. I guess it's not a big deal or something that affects the game itself. It's just hard to figure if it came that way from the factory or if I did something to discolor or smudge him.
I mistakenly said "Monsters, Inc." about another play set. That series seems to be "Monsters University." I'm thinking that will be my second play set. Then I wanted to save "Pirates of the Caribbean" for last.
Rapunzel can only work in the toy box, and I haven't opened her yet. I'm still not sure what you DO in the toy box, or how to build things. There were capsules I opened in the play set with labels like they were pieces to use in the toy box, but because I exited out, I didn't switch back to toy box mode.
Now it's probably a matter of pacing myself or not playing 10 hours a day! Another quirk seems to be how you rotate the camera. They don't really tell you in the game, but the load screens have all these tips, like using the D-pad to possibly move the camera. With the packs of "power discs" you can buy, I wondered if doubles were a big deal (so far, I don't have any doubles), but those tips said you can use more than one of a disc to intensify the effect. I think the Tron ring thing (identity disc?) lets you earn more sparks and level up faster. That's one thing I don't understand so far. I did get to levels 1 and 2, but it seemed like a LONG way to go from level 1 to level 2 collecting a bunch of sparks and not seeing the blue meter move at all, until I beat a certain boss. It makes me curious about whether they might limit how many sparks you can collect before you clear a mission. Even though your level number goes up, I haven't seen a pause menu or a screen where you adjust your stats, which was how I remember that system working in a game like "X-Men: Legends." It may just be that you get predefined stat boosts. I think the idea of a "skill tree" or adding new powers started in the 2.0 version of the game.
So, yeah. It's pretty neat thus far. I'm wanting to go back now and play! I'm sure that I've barely even scratched the surface, since I focused on the play set. Tomorrow, I was also planning a trip to TRU, checking for amiibo restocks (Capt. Falcon and Fox). Tuesday might also be a new "wave" of Infinity stuff, but that should only affect the 3.0 content.
