I know how difficult these types of situations in the family can be. My eldest sister passed away over 20 years ago but unfortunately her husband is a grifter and went to town racking up a ton of credit card debt on their youngest daughter's credit cards. He's retired living on his SS check. They're in a low cost of living area and he signed over the house to his youngest daughter over a decade ago and they both live there. He has health issues so she's basically his caregiver. In all likelihood he used her credit cards to bet on gambling websites and lost to the tune of tens of thousands. She's in her early 30s on disability for being legally blind. She wound up declaring bankruptcy. She's not going to turn her father in for credit card fraud. Growing up with a screwed up father warped my nieces' and nephew's perspective on things. Only one of them is now emotionally healthy and cut contact with their father and siblings. They're all out west, three thousand miles away, and there is nothing we can do about the screwiness that goes on with my late sister's husband and their kids so we keep them at arm's length and out of our hair.
Unfortunately sometimes family members are downright awful people, sorry excuses for human beings, and money greed can be a big motivator for cruelty.
