VW Golf 1.6 CAY 2010 - Poor cold start and cold idle - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2010
Engine Size and Code *: 1600 CAY
( Optional ) Scanner Used: KTS
( Optional) Fault Codes: none

Only covered 14000 miles.

It is just a little reluctant to cold start, usually need 5 secs cranking. Idle is then a little rough, can stall occasionally. Once it is warm no problems.

We noticed the glow plugs are only powered very briefly, no post heat at all.

I have read some info about egr faults and software updates. Does anyone know if these sypmtoms match that problem.

Customer has asked local dealer if it is subject to recall, dealer says no.

Anyone know how to check software is up to date?

The easiest way would be to get it on ODIS or VAS-PC and carry out a SVM check.

I would have added AL to the list but I'm being told that its a bit behind in that dept nowadays.

If you post the Vin no and the current software version their are a couple of VAG guys on here that may be able to help

ok software update but did you had a chances to check basics? Fault codes? fuel pressure on cranking? Compresison ?

There is an issue with these 1.6 engines subject to a technical bulletin or two.
Software versions have been updated approximately 10 x now to deal with poor cold starting, poor cold running, egr valve varnishing, DPF regeneration stalls, added injector diagnosis to the software etc.....
Shite engine unfortunately with lots of issues.

What tool are you using to diagnose it with & can you read the engine ECU part number & software version with it?

If so, post up the part number & SW version & i'll let you know if you're on the latest software version & the pitfalls of updating it to the latest version if yours is a few behind.

Reading it with KTS, no codes, very low mileage vehicle (all at top of first post)

Software no on ECU matches that reported by KTS
Obviously not been updated yet.

Afternoon Phil,

there should be another 4 x numbers after the 03L906023 A / B number, these 4 x numbers are the software version.

The latest version of software for this ecu is 9971.
However without seeing what version of software it is currently on I cant advise why it has been updated (unless it is currently on the latest software?)

Hi Jon,
KTS is reluctant to reveal but we found it under EOBD.

Version 5863

Calibration verification 62efe845

We have left it out in the cold most of day. By cycling the key several times to heat up plugs it started instantly but idle is still poor.

There are software updates for cold running issues on that software part number Phil.

I'd be tempted to start with a software update to the latest software version (9971).
If you take it to a dealer for the update ask them to update using Action code 32EA otherwise you may end up getting no update at all & being charged for the privilege. (some dealer techs don't seem able to accurately look up software relating to a specific fault - Bonus issues etc).

If asking an Autologic user to update it, ask for software version 9971 - that is the latest available.

Autologic have worked hard at getting their engine software version comparison up to date over the last 12 months, but there are still times when you need to ask for the later software as it isn't displayed on the tool.

There are other issues with this engine as Piotr has pointed out a software update may only be one part of a cure.

This engine suffers EGR, DPF & Injector faults regularly. It is also prone to wiring harness issues.

Thanks very much Jon.

I had read about the issues you mention. My intention once this problem is dealt with is to advise customer to get shot of it. It is really not a wise choice of engine for very low mileage infrequent use(is any modern diesel).

Anyone got Autologic vw within an hours drive of King's Lynn?

If not I will go to dealer armed with your info, hopefully that will cut through some of the bull!

Went for an adventure yesterday to visit Glyn. Also noticed during first few minutes of drive significant diesel knock under light acceleration, again OK as soon as temp gauge started to move.
Reflash completed to 9971.
Started, idled and drove correctly this morning.

Thanks to everyone for their input, especially Mr Morgan and Mr Morgan.
