Landrover Discovery 2.7 2008 - Broken timing belt #

Year of Manufacture *: 2008
Engine Size and Code *: 2.7

Hi

Got this disco 3 with snapped timing belt, took covers off and found the mounting point for timing belt tensioner had sheared clean off, this is also part of oil pump housing. Any known issues? next question is it easier to take body off to get to cyl heads or is it really possible to do these in place ?? bearing in mind it will prob need sump off too to get oil pump housing done.

Hi tony he's asking for a approx estimate !! Which I know is impossible as the internal damage is invisible at the moment .Autodata is saying 23 hours to rem and refit both cyl heads , but that's not removing the body ! So can the heads be done in place ???

Hi John.
Not had to do head removal on this engine , but have done a
n/s turbo on a 3.6 tdv8 range rover which you have to take the body off.
So I would imagine you would have to remove body anyway to do the heads.
I would imagine it will be a massive job and a massive bill.

You can get a recon unit for aboutÂ£3500. So your talking about Â£5000supplied and fitted. Sorry to say but I can not see it being any cheaper stripping down and rebuilding with new parts.

Common amongst 2007-2010 2.7 engines. I won't change a belt unless I fit a modified oil pump.
2005/2006 don't seem affected.
New pump has a beefed up mounting point.

I personally wouldn't take the heads off without lifting the body, too much time wasted.

23hrs is L/R book time for heads,lifting the body inclusive.

Likely too much damage to repair, with a lack of internal parts available.
Don't quote a price, as you could soon add an extra £1000 or two without realising.

Has the vehicle had a replacement timing belt in the past or still on the original ?

So why do you have it? surely this would be down to whoever replaced the belt, If I was you I would push that shed outside and refer the customer back from whence he came !!

I bet there isn't a failure of any of the components the other garage fitted. They were just not aware that a new oil pump was wise to fit, due to the poor design.
So, none of their components would have failed, just an existing part.

So if you change the brake discs, would the wheel bearing be covered?

It's just a case of product knowledge, like replacing a water pump on a VW when doing a belt.

Has the customer tried Landrover customer service, as this is a widely known problem, which of course they haven't heard of, but there has been cases of them renewing the engine FOC.

Last year did a S type Jag, same engine, sump full of bearing swarf and knocking like a good un. Nothing availble for rebuild, OE or aftermarket.
Fitted an OE exchange unit. Good deal easier to extract than from a Disco. Numerous gaskets, seals etc are not included with engine but are essential.
By the time we had replaced most of the steel coolant pipes, egr valves due to terrible access once engine in the total came to to over £7000.
The customer was aware and happy to pay.

That is a whopper that you had there Phil!

You set me wondering about the biggest invoice that I have produced. I don't think that I have ever exceeded Â£3,000.

I would be interested to learn about other workshop experiences.

Hi Dave,

As I posted above, we had to replace failed n/s turbo, on Range rover 3.6 tdv8, with consequential damage adjacent egr and injectors. That was £4500 !
I dread to think what some of the Landrover main dealer bills are like .
