Vauxhall Insignia - DPF Problems #

Engine Size and Code *: 2.0 Ltr - A20DTH
( Optional ) ECU Type: EDC 17
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Autocom
( Optional) Fault Codes: As Listed.

Greetings,

I would be grateful for your thoughts on this problem:

History: This vehicle is subject to very short journeys and about 6 weeks ago went into limp mode and was booked into the Main Dealer. This is a copy of what they did:

Carry out diag service vehicle soon on & vehicle in limp mode. Carried out tech 2 diag & found the DFP filter @ 95%. Checked boost system for leaks non found. Reset sensors using GDS tool. Carried out ECU software up date. Carried out DPF regen Cleared codes all now ok. Applied for car pass.

The fault code they found was P2453 (5a) and the sensor which was reset was the DPF sensor. Customer was advised to give the vehicle a blast on the local motorway once a week so it could regen naturally. Approx 3 weeks later, the same thing happened and booked into main dealer. Customer not sure what they did, but it drove fine afterwards.

The same thing happened again and I was asked to look at it with a view to delete DPF software and remap after removal of DPF filter internals. It may not be possible for me delete the software so I carried out a DTC check which showed the following: P2548 - Particulate Filter Regen time, PO674- Cylinder 4 Glow Plug, P2453 - DPF Diff pressure sensor, PO03A Turbo Boost Control Position not learned. All cleared down bar P2453 which stayed on whilst with the ignition on and stayed on whilst the engine running. Vehicle still in limp.

My questions are these: Could this just be a fault with the DPF pressure sensor or is the customer looking at a new DPF at £1350 if I cant delete the DPF software. The P2548 indicates to me that there was a problem with the regen time? Where is the DPF Pressure sensor sited? Finally, I failed to look to see if Autocom can reset the DPF Pressure sensor and may require Tech 2.

You don,t need to be plugged into the car to check so yes it,s listed.

Dealer using Tech 2 and not MDI (Tech 3) ???

Hi Pete

This week i to have looked at a insignia with a dpf code of p2453 [5a].

The pressure sensor seamed to be reading ok. So looked the code up on vaux tis,

There was a tsb which said to clear the code you had to re adapt the pressure sensor and wait for them to investigate the fault further.

So they can change the software to fix the fault. I will get you a copy of the tsb.

I then checked for a software update and there was one relating to the dpf temp sensors or something like that[ Its not always that clear what there for.]

The car was a lease car and they wouldn't pay for the update. They spoke to vaux and they would do it free of charge. hth.

Thanks Kev and Ian for your prompt responses.

Kev: When I visited the vehicle this afternoon, I did not have sight of the paperwork which the Dealer gave to the customer and he e.mailed me them this evening prior to posting this problem. It was then that I saw they had reset the DPF Sensor and then of course it occurred to me that maybe Autocom could do it. If I cant delete the DPF DTC's with new software and remap, I will reset the DPF Sensor and go from there. However, I don't want to see the vehicle back after a few weeks with the same problem.

Ian: With the paperwork sent this evening is a copy of TSB 2684 relating to Fault Code 2453 (5a) and basically it states as you have suggested. This has been complied with as far as I can see with the resets/updates etc and the fault has returned. I note from the TSB that the procedure should be carried out until the root cause can be determined. I am presuming at the moment the root cause is a faulty DPF and I suspect I am unwittingly following the same diagnostic path of the main dealer to ascertain the "root cause".

Still does not tell me WHY the dealer is using Tech 2 ??? or why you have not checked if DPF sensor learning is listed on your auto-com program ? Do you know how to ?

Morning Kevin,

I have NOT suggested that the dealer is using Tech 2. I merely suggested borrowing one because I assumed that Tech 2 is the all singing and dancing tool for Vauxhall (so I am told). I have not checked Autocom listing because it is safely locked away in my van in my garage. At this time of night I have better things to do and can wait until tomorrow afternoon when I have the time.

Well MDI is the tool for this, as tech 2 is now out-dated by the MDI on later cars.

My version of auto-com is loaded onto a couple of lap-tops, one of which i,m using to type this, so it is always available to check if it can do the job or not.

Pete as you know they can't have used Tech 2 it's now too old MDI is the tool to use. VauxCom lists your vehicle but not all engines. The software update usually cures this fault if the filter isn't blocked.

snap on solus ultra does the pressure sensors on these. also vauxcom does.

Greetings,

Just an up-date on this. When the vehicle went into the main dealers the second time, they carried out more or less the same procedure (FOC) as on the first occasion with the parting words that if it re-occurs again then it requires a new DPF. The route I intend to follow now is with DPF deletions and a re-map. I am waiting for a setting file from Dimsport in Italy and then go from there. I do not see the point now in following the same procedures as carried out by Vauxhall for a 3rd time.

Failed on this one I'm afraid. There was no guarantee with the setting file so I did not want to take the risk. Customer now looking for another local remapping firm.

Hi Pete,

Although now probably academic, as a matter of interest, do you know whether the customer complied with the request "to give the vehicle a blast on the local motorway once a week so it could regen naturally"?

Or if they simply carried on with their very short journeys.

Hi Tony,

He certainly did. Once a week he took it out on the local motorway and gave it a good seeing to. Someone was telling me that if he replaced the DPF Pressure sensor it might cure his problem. He wasn't interested in throwing more money at it without guarantees, can't blame him for that.

Hi Pete

I know you probably won,t see the car again its just the way i read the tsb.

Unless there is a newer version of the tsb then the might of vaux techs haven't found the answer yet.

The software update is possible not the one to repair the vehicle.

I am not to sure that the fault relates to a faulty or full dpf due to the description of the code.

The description [if i remember correctly] was the pressure sensor has a implausible signal.

P.S in your 1st post you mentioned a glow plug fault, did that return.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for that. Yes I quite agree and reading the TSB again it states amongst other things that the cause "is under investigation" and "until the root cause is defined". The TSB also applies to the 2010 2L Astra J. I have tried to reproduce the TSB here for the benefit of others but its all black magic to me to do that. All the other fault codes disappeared including the one relating to the glow plugs. The "fix" so the customer was advised was to replace the DPF.

The one i looked at also had a hi soot loading and the long regen code in.

But it had a 60 mile daily round trip.

Its just the code description that doesn't make sense for a full dpf.

But when you know the answer to a fault code it doesn't allways make sense.

p.s On thinking about it a faulty dpf could cause a implausible signal fault, if the pressures are changing unexpectly.

It would need alot of testing before i would be fitting a new dpf.

both of this fault codes P2453 and P2458 logged in Insignia this week . problem? Blocked dpf filter , lack of power , limp home mode. Dpf removed , engine ecu remaped. Root cause of blocked dpf? Hole in of the boost pipes. Dpf succesfully removed , engine ecu remaped, pipe replaced - no more problems. Engine ecu bosch EDC17CP07
