Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi 2000 - Non start - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2000
Engine Size and Code *: 2.0 Hdi
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Maxidiag

A bit of help please on this one. Car hasnt been started since beginning of Jan. Battery has been on charge and engine turns over briskly.Some initial firing but wont run.I dont have a "good" scanner for French stuff but the Maxidiag I have is usually pretty good. This time round it wouldnt give me codes only definitions which are:
INTERMITTENT FAULT. ERG CIRCUIT. ERG SOLENOID VALVE CIRCUIT SHORT-CIRCUIT TO EARTH OR OPEN CIRCUIT.
INTERMITTENT FAULT. TURBO PRESSURE. SOLENOID VALVE CIRCUIT SHORT CIRCUIT TO EARTH OR OPEN CIRCUIT.
INTERMITTENT FAULT. FUEL LOW PRESSURE PUMP SUPPLY. OPEN CIRCUIT OR SHORT CIRCUIT TO EARTH.
INTERMITTENT FAULT. 3RD PISTON DEACTIVATING DEVICE. SHORT TO EARTH OR OPEN CIRCUIT.
I believe the 3rd piston is on top of the high presure pump. It has a resistance of 28 ohms which I think is correct but I am only seeing 3.5 volts on cranking. Is this correct?
Would you expect fuel flow to the filter via the pre supply pump on cranking the engine or is this dependant on other factors?
Car is at owners house and I dont usually do home visits!

Hi Tony

You should have a low pressure supply of 2.5 bar at your fuel filter.
Ensure that is correct before moving forward.

On cranking can you see rail pressure...you require 250 bar approx for injector control to operate.

3rd piston de activation...i haven't ever seen a non start,this de activates one of the pistons under light running loads only.

The pressure regulator on rear of pump are prone to sticking/contamination but you usually have pressure monitoring codes logged.

Low pressure your first priority

The fault codes you have suggest a lack of supply. Check the double relay. A fault here would also explain the lack of fuel pre supply. Time to get the wiring diag and meter out.

Thanks for all your most usefull replies chaps.
Steve,thanks for the offer,I may well take you up on that.
I did wonder if there is a terminal corrosion issue as the engine bay is quite "fluffy" with oxidisation.
Will go back to it on monday better prepared.

check to see if u have live feed to in tank feul pump when ignition turned on should stay live for 10-15 seconds if no feed the most common reason i have come accross has been corroded connector block under driver side carpet near pedels hope this helps.

Be aware that that the Siemens system doesn't have an in-tank lift pump.

I've replaced a few fuel filters on HDi's recently, before they were due, due to non-start/poor running.

Had two of these now with issues with fuel dump valve, small switch on top of high pressure pump held on with three torx screws, I have a substitute one which will allow start, think this unit must sometimes stay open not allowing full fuel pressure, though I am happy to be corrected!

Hello. I had one in like this last week and found it to be the bsm fuse box relay plate on the n/s/f inner wing. If I remember correctly you should check fuse 30 for power. The relay on the circuit powers all the suspect items. Few choices but chassis and reg at main dealer should sort that one out. Hope this helps, as I said the fault was exactly the same but obviously relevant tests should prove if yours yours is the same.

Revisited vehicle armed with wiring diagram.As said the faults were all related. Checked power at appropiate fuses and at the double relay and all looked good.What I couldnt understand was the 3.5 volts at the various "faulty" valves as AD states 12 volts. Happened to notice the inertia switch featured as a key part of activation of the double relay. Hey presto it just needed resetting! Car started and ran fine.No idea why it had tripped!
Out of interest I rechecked voltage at the various valves and still had 3.5 volts which is obviously correct!
Dodgy AD info?
