Hi Dave Off top of my head it was a design change. basically from 2001 to 2003 the MAF were analog type fitted to DDE 4. Then After 2004 DDE 5 (euro 3) and later systems the MAF changed to a Digital MAF. You can fit the newer digital MAF to the earlier DDE systems but the ECU needs to be reprogrammed to make it work...... this is why it can get interesting when you are trying diagnose a MAF fault and the parts have all ready been interchanged or the software levels have been changed and incorrect parts fitted but the parts catolog say there are correct, you need to know which type you are working on.... hope this helps
