If it's running partially on its own exhaust gas it'll draw less air through the air intake system. That's why a lot of vehicles will give a code for AFM excessive flow when, in fact, it is the egr system suffering insufficient flow.

The ecu will normally control the egr valve duty cycle to get the required drop in air flow.
