Thanks for your advice, yes the problem does seem to be with the actuator. I have cleaned out the EGR valve which was completely gunged up and I am waiting for a new breather to be delivered as Chris suggested and has been suggested by others as a common issue on this engine.
The actuator on the turbo is free and smooth to move by hand when the engine is off. With the engine on idle the actuator is at its lowest point, when the rpm is increased the actuator does not move so it is not opening the varaible vanes and there is no increase in charge air pressure. The specified pressure should be 1226 mbar at 2000 rpm but it remains at 996 mbar.
This actuator is electronically controlled, but I cannot figure out if the recieving signal is coming from the ECU or is affected by another sensor. Does anybody have any further information on this turbo system - wiring diagram etc, or is there something obvious I am missing?
