I was under the impression that older engines did not need egr because lean burning engines are the result of emission related regs. The first "target" was CO/HC's it then became CO2 and next on the list seems to be NOX along with particulants. Even at light throttle loads older vehicles, petrol and diesel chucked out loads of unburnt fuel and nobody cared about what gases where coming out. It sounds by your question however, that I may be wrong in that assumption?
