Hi Carl, Your question is a good one as far as I am concerned, but can I ask you a few?
1) what does EGR stand for?
2) what does the system do?
3) What is it hoping to achieve?
4) How does it achieve it?
5) Under what conditions does it operate?
6) What would be the result of it malfunctioning?
7) Why?
There are more questions, but if you can answer the above you will have a good grasp on your own question. HTH
