If its the Y17DTL in the past i've had problems with these caused by the fuel pump ecu but can have them running to part prove its this at fault by using a power probe on the spill valve whilst someone is cranking it over.

Can't remember if i added a positive or a negative feed to the spill valve but it will start although run very rough and smoke like mad. This to me proves fuel pump (mechanically) is capable of supply fuel and the high pressure side is working.
