Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 Z10XEP 2005 3 cylinder - Misfire to number 3 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
Engine Size and Code *: 1000cc
( Optional ) Scanner Used: tech2

This corsa came in with mil on and very poor performance. misfire cyl 3 logged and vehicle misfiring. New coil and plugs fitted as usual,fault not cured. further testing showed injector 3 not been triggered from ecu (this vehicle would idle and rev fine when faults cleared and stationary, go up the road and fault occured straight away). Suspected faulty ecu as usual with vauxhalls. we fitted a new ecu and fault identical misfire cyl 3.

OK so I test injector resistance is ok but for £35 i decide to replace number 3,same fault!! (and i wonder why i have little hair!!) compression tests had showed fine on all cylinders (cars only done 7k). the fault eventually turned out to be the carbon evap canister (under os/f inner wing) full with water and also water in the fuel tank, removed fuel tank cleaned and fitted new canister cars fine (£850 later) i dont believe customer has had water put in her tank so suspect the canister takes on water over a period of time. £120 out of pocket on this job! joy. hope this helps someone if they get a vauxhall with cyl 3 misfire, the pipe goes into number 3 cylinder from the evap valve ecu see's water misfire and shuts injector off.

Yes Sean. That is a common problem.

( sorry, i thought there had been posts about that earlier ) although i haven't seen a corsa with that problem for a year or so.

The first one we did, We drained the tank and cured the fault and it came back with the same problem a few weeks later when we found the waterlogged carbon cannister.

£850.00 wowwwww. Is that what youve spent on it or charging the customer. ??

I also assumed that the water is being soacked up by the carbon filter and then runs back to the tank. ( Ive not seen any official info about the problem )

Hi tony.
i charged £150 for my labour for initial quote of coil ecu. once ecu is fitted £395+vat i cant remove it but how do you justify the rest of the bill to the customer,i had way too much work on and ended up sending to 2 other garages for diagnosis and repair, charged her for canister and fuel tank labour but swallowed the other garages bills so it ended up costing me about £150 from my pocket. we live and learn didnt want to hit the customer with the extra when the ecu was my bad diagnosis. i agree with the canister filling up over time and then draining back to tank.

Thats where we Differ, It would be nice to think that i could fit parts that the car didn't need and get away with it. ( Basically as the Dealers do ) If I fitted a new ecu to a popular GM Vehicle and it did not cure the problem, I would usually Reset the ecu and remove it, So that My Bad diagnosis did not cost my customer money. ( And I do get it wrong like everyone so i am not saying that I am better at diagnosis than anyone else )

That is one thing I normally offer the customer when fitting an Expensive ecu so that they know that the price quoted will fix it or the part will be removed. ( I don't offer the same service on French stuff though due to being one time programmable, )

P,S I am not trying to wind you up, Just saying how I Treat my customers, But I suppose it all depends on if you think you will use that Ecu in the near future, Which most likely, We would.

Ohh. I hope you at least Reset the old ecu so that youve got a good spare for trying on the next Z10XEP ( and possibly Z12 XEP etc ) that comes in. ??

I would suspect this fault occured along time before you recieved the car, evap systems are a sealed system, therefore i suspect that the evap was probly leaking in moisture which collected and turned into water, also vapours are re-introduce into the inlet for re-burn with the in-coming air, but you say it goes into no3 cyclinder, which i find odd !not total convinced as the ecu wont see water, to just shut no3 down indepently
Not saying anything is wrong with the job, maybe just need to understand it better on the description side

I am not sure how the water gets into the system, or if its fully sealed, But i would have thought that it would need some sort of vent to atmosphere after the carbon filter to allow the tank to breath, otherwise wouldn't it create a vaccum as the fuels pulled out and cause the tank to collapse. ??

We had 2 with that water problem and on the first one, We Drained the tank and didn't notice the canister, So we sent it out with a nice clean tank and it lasted about 3 weeks and came back with the same problem. ( Tank full of water again ) Thats when we realised that the cannister was full and changed it.

In Fact whilst Typing, I have just been sent 2 links saying that there is a vent to atmosphere at least on some cannisters.( Thanks Milan )

The Reason for a Misfire on Cylinder 3 is that the fuel supply enters the rail at no 3 Cylinder end, So The water fills no 3 injector first, Then as Soon as it detects a misfire on Cylinder 3, It shuts the injector off causing a full blown misfire.

Or thats how I understand it unless anyone has a better theory. ??

have one in at present
55 plate Z12XEP 13025 miles
random misfire/no4 cyl misfire
AA has changed coil pack and plugs
and dumped on us
only happens in first mile or so from cold
it cuts no 4 cylinder shuts down injector
clear code will then run on four cylinders
carbon canister full of water
apparently this had been in dealers approx six months ago for water in fuel tank
new tank etc later a bill for £600 plus by dealer
have not checked the tank content yet !!!

I would advice your customer to keep the fuel tank nearly full at all times.

i agree with tony 100% on why the ecu shuts off number 3 cylinder. Like he states,the fuel is fed to number 3 injector first,but i believe that it is possible for the water to alsio be drawn down the vent pipe into the inlet manifold which is also where number 3 cylinder is. glad this has helped someone anyway. and if anyone wants a really cheap 7000 mile ecu just drop me a line
