Nestor's sacrifice Posted by Caryn on August 10, 2024, 2:23 pm I was looking this up online and came across your site which was marked as missing information on this piece. Found this at a garage sale, not sure if you want more info on it?

It seems you are right, this pattern should be correctly titled Hector Chiding Paris. Nestor's Sacrifice is another pattern which we already have. It was not uncommon for patterns to be mismarked since often workers couldn't read the pattern names, which appears to have happened here. What a shame the plate is so damaged! Thank you again for the pictures and the information.

If it was assembled a bit better it would do as an example of that pattern for the database, till something better came along, but as is, is too jumbled. What a shame! At least we know it exists now. I should ask Dick Henrywood if he has seen the pattern since writing that article or if this is a first for him too. In fact that's what I will do. Thanks again for sharing it with us!

From the looks of the reverse with those four wonderful feet (to me, somewhat "unique" or at least quite unusual), this would be some sort of serving piece or cake/cheese stand, not a plate. And what is that additional piece in the image of the reverse? It looks like a handle. Does that belong with this piece? As to value, as a matter of policy we don't discuss values in this MB, as they are so subjective. But surely the value is much greater as a whole, even showing the damage, as opposed to a mosaic?

That extra piece was just masking tape that had been holding it together while the glue was drying I think the value is going to be hard to ascertain as there was absolutely no reference to this online except for your site!

TCC Web Administrator on August 15, 2024, 5:14 pm, in reply to "Re: Nestor's sacrifice/Hector Chiding Paris" OK, I'm going to just partly break our policy, and say that in this condition and given the subject matter, in just my personal opinion, you are unlikely to be able to more than cover the cost of one nice restaurant meal if you were even able to sell this item. Given the chance that two people were interested in it in an auction, you might do a bit better. Maybe two dinners. But it is a really lovely piece and I personally would have welcomed it to my collection if I had seen it at that garage sale.
