Bill, I have seen and have an early Grade 1 that does not have any line engraving on it. Looking at it you would think it was a 00 grade but this is earlier. A good tip to look for is the ebony tipped for-end that Grade 1's had when the 00 grade came out, did not. The picture of the Grade 1 I have with the engraving and Bernard barrels had to be a special ordered gun, as there was no engraving on Grade 1's except line engraving around the locks. As for the two dogs on point butt plate, I have an early Grade 2 that has one. These butt plates have been used on other guns also and were not a L.C. Smith butt plates.
