Yep, I looked and could not find a maker's name on the barrels. About the breech balls: If I understand what you are talking about (remember this is my first old shotgun) they don't seem slanted or angled, but I could easily be misunderstanding what you mean. Could you explain?
Yep the forend is definitely wedge shaped; and sadly has a bit of wear.
Like you said, it has some engraving; but not much. I think you are correct that it is Quality #2. Do you think it could be a hybrid or transition period gun?
About the black powder rounds: Well, I took it to be oiled after I bought it and was told that I should not use modern 12 gauge shells because the L.C. Smith barrels were too hard and as a result could shatter. I was also told that I had to find someone who could make me some older style black powder 12 gauge shells. What do you think?
