Damascus quality is discussed here Lloyd http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dfg2hmx7_22ddqshmdq And the Birmingham Proof House Trial, which showed little practical difference comparing quality fluid steel, twist, or the various damascus patterns, is here http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dfg2hmx7_242cxhh9hfq A significant aspect to the cost was related to the difficulty of manufacture of the particular pattern, and if it could be 'machine made.' Certainly the more complex patterns like Bernard II or Herring-bone required more skilled man hours.
