Lloyd, I've refinished a few L.C. stocks and have also finished, re-finished some furniture that I have made. My favorite wood is cherry with a French Polish on it. Since gun stocks are walnut, the pores must be filled. I have used Watco Danish Oil stain in a medium walnut and used 400 wet/dry sandpaper and slurried the stain into the pores. Wipe off and let sit for 24 hrs and then I usually use from the can a 3 lb. cut Amber Shellac with a drop of oil on a "pad" composed of a cotton ball in the center with an old cotton tee shirt tightly wrapped into a ball (size of a quarter). Only put a few drops of shellac on the pad and only 1 drop of oil and put it on in a circular motion, and don't stop on the wood, lift off or else you will stick. In 1 hour you can do a stock and forend. Keep going over it after it has dried to get rid of the "dry spots". Put on as many coats as you like.
Some people say that French Polishing is too hard to do, if I can do it so can you.
First read a book by George Frank on the subject, he was a master finish restorer in France.
