I use tung oil based Pro-Custom Oil http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=5531&title=PRO-CUSTOM+OIL+GUNSTOCK+FINISH after saturating the wood with 50-50 mix of gum turpentine - Spar Varnish http://www.valsparglobal.com/val/resident/manowar.jsp I apply the Pro-custom Oil with an air brush and sand between coats with 400/600/800/1000 grit. To completely fill the pores and build a deep solid oil finish takes 25-35 coats and about 6 weeks to accomplish. Finish is dulled back to satin at the end using Brownell's Triple "F" Stock Rubbing Compound http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=1130&title=TRIPLE+%22F%22?%20COMPOUND This finish is impervious to water and can readily be repaired with fine sandpaper and touching up the scratches using a Q-tips and more Pro-Custom Oil.
