    Ned,
You've provided an opportunity for us to have a little good-natured debate and fun; but realistically, I believe this should be the bottom line. If your gun has survived all these years with nearly all original finishes and untouched screws, you will hurt its collector value with any modifications; so leave the old gal as is. Further, as Mr. Hip points out, even the best gunsmith can inadverdantly damage a screw slot; so there remains a slight possibility that even a cleaning could result in minimal damage.
On the other hand, if the gun was used before she was "retired" and no longer retains near perfect finishes, a proper service and careful useage will not harm the gun's value. As FYI, my 5E also had 32" barrels and remained in overall high condition; but did show honest use. As to actually shooting high-grade Smith guns, this is an individual choice; and, as I take great pleasure from using my vintage guns and therefore refuse to purchase a pristine 98% plus original vintage gun of any make, I had/have no reservations regarding carefully using my 5E, my A-2, my Special, or any other high grade Smith or other make vintage gun I own/have owned. But there are limitations, and mine are: no rough useage (reserved only for "easy" shooting like clays and pass shooting doves; no briar thickets or beaver swamps), and use exclusively with low-pressure loads. As we all like to see nice Smith guns, post a photo or two; and good luck!
