I discovered why my gun is firing while on safe. The safety is engaged and the trigger only moves slightly, but it is enough to trip the sidelock. Pardon me for not knowing the names of different parts, but the place where the spring catches the hammer on the sidelock looks great. There isn't any rounding or wear. The trigger/safety contact appears to have worn enough to give the trigger enough play to allow this.

So this looks like 60 seconds with a file would fix it. Would I be committing some awful sin if I filed it just enough to get it working again??

It also turns out that my stock is already drilled for the vise technique of aligning the spring if I ever completely disassemble it. Rob.
