PBR me ASAP!!! As a semi-reformed drinker of Pabst's Blue Ribbon (affectionately known in the lands of my youth as PBR) and moreover, as a shooter/owner of damascus firearms I have enjoyed this post immensely. Destry always entertains! My own proof-works involved a 1967 3/4 International Harvester 4X4 Pickup, a section of stout cord, and some very hot hand-loads. The effect was much the same, however. By carefully using a micrometer at repeatable points, I could detect no dimension change or any other perceivable problems with the weapon I was testing (a 1901 Lefever G grade). I then went on to shoot that gun (w/very light loads!)for many years without incident. English-proof is a purely mental thing, not a scientific or otherwise tangible guarantee of safety. I'm sure they do a very good job over there and I have paid extra to own guns with it in place, but....does that mean my pickup truck- based process is of any less value? I think not. As I understand it,the laws of England (and the Continent of Europe) require certified proof for a gun's subsequent legal sale, and having it can and does increase it's value. That can, I suppose, translate to increased value here as well. In the for-what-its-worth category, my current damascus shooter is, indeed, in modern English proof. My next one might not be, but that does not mean that I will love it any less. LM
