Thomas, if you tried re-cocking the cocking rods with the barrels and forend off, using an adjustable wrench, the forend has nothing to do with this step right now. if the gun was dry fired and taken apart but not re-cocked, the cocking rods are tight, you cannot move them with your fingers (there should be a minimal amount of play, but only very little). Re-cock them until you hear a click, do the good side first to hear this, then the other side. If this side does not cock, then the problem is between the cocking rod to the lifter to the sear.

If you said you had the sideplates off and recocked it and fired it, look and compare the two and see if there is excessive wear between the lifters and sears. Also look and see if the lifter is not loose on the cocking rod. It is a square hole fit and it's possible that is is loose enough to not let it re-cock.

The cocking rod plate that James was talking about, if it is worn will definetly not let you re-cock the gun. But you will still be able to re-cock it with just the receiver and a wrench.
