My sympathy for junior doctors only stretches so far. Mrs works in ops in the NHS and she says a significant majority of junior doctors are rude, entitled and lazy. She’s worked across three hospitals and she said other staff feel the same about them.

Hi Tonski, former resident (junior) doctor here. 2012-25 so at the age of 41 and 14 and a half years experience - I wouldn’t exactly say I was very “junior” when I was striking last year.

The ops team and the resident doctors are often miles apart in their priorities. I’ve had some absolutely batshit conversations with some of them over the years and whilst as a consultant I’ve got a bit of a better understanding of their remit and pressures, I’m not surprised that your missus talks of friction between the groups. Turn the heat up under it all with constant funding cuts, lack of medical training jobs, and the constant moral injury of trying and failing to do your job in a never deteriorating system - then yeah, I bet it does lead to rudeness at times.

I can guarantee you though mate that this will not be one sided. In fact I’d be amazed if the degree of exposure to rudeness and bullying didn’t fall far heavier actually on the resident doctors in most trusts - speaking from experience.

I wouldn’t be daft enough to say that one set of professionals was responsible and tar everyone with the same brush though.

moast doctors i've met, both medically and socially are dedicated professionals. some come accross as arrogant, but most work pretty hard i reckon.

I worked with all grades of medics from SHO'S [or whatever they are called now] to senior Consultants for years and generally they were hard working quality professionals

IMO I would attribute rude entitled and lazy to individuals and not a profession

Read my post again mate. I was talking about neither a profession nor senior doctors…they are very well respected and hard working. I was talking about young junior doctors. And I’m just saying what is a widely held opinion by staff who work with them across three Merseyside hospitals. I know because the Mrs’ colleagues have said as much.

Same, I’ve found the junior doctors, as they used to be called, that I’ve worked alongside to be compassionate thoughtful and dedicated in the large majority.

A mate of mine's son had always wanted to be a doctor. He was a straight A student and did loads of voluntary work (with St John's etc) to enhance his chances of being accepted onto med school.

The summer before Uni he got a support job at a local hospital and the advice he got from virtually all junior doctors was 'do something else'.
The said the hours are a nightmare, the loans are massive, the pay poor. And the chances are that this will be the case for at least the first 10 years of his career.

So, he jibbed it. It's crazy that we've got to this point.

When I was studying in London I had two medical students as housemates. One has since moved to Denmark to work and the other has spewed medicine completely and now has a job in the city.

same with teaching mate, my Cousins girl has just graduated from Uni with a degree in early years education (or whatever they call it now) she did it in spite of her Dad who is a Deputy Head telling her that she should probably do something else (and all his mates saying the same)

I don't understand how healing the unwell and educating the next generation have been devalued over the years as much as they have been.

Amazed that Teachers aren’t properly paid for what they do and respected more

It’s probably the most important role in society, yet it’s not valued anywhere near as such.

I know it’s a popular profession to get in to and supply and demand and all that, it really should be the best of the best that do it and should be targeted to do it.

It’s been devalued as the NHS has been stripped and devalued IMO

With the Trust I worked for there was an obsession with corporate bullshit and PR etc

Lots of focus on demographics for nothing other than ticking boxes

For example they went through a phase of asking existing users and new referrals if they were military vets’

All well and good but they seemed to do fûck all with the gathered data at the cliff face but from a demographic data perspective it looked good

You're right. And as always demonising the public sector starts with Thatcher but Cameron and Osborne supercharged all of this.

The stuff that they did in 2010-2012 to justify austerity by pitting public vs private sector changed the dynamic in terms of the wider public.

Gove etc referring to the teaching unions/sector as the blob, all played a part in how the public sector is perceived.

A union ballot has to have a 50% turnout to be 'legal' - just imagine how open to bad actors that is. A company could simply pay a little incentive for loads of deliberately 'lazy' union membership, and they'd scupper ballots without raising a finger.

And yet councillors, MPs, police commissioners, etc. can all be voted in to serve their terms on any turnout that is returned, no matter how low.

They’ve split the teachers unions so much that they aren’t worth the paper they are written on. Left the NASUWT as they are shocking, joined the NEU and they have a bit more, but if they truly wanted to change they would join together as they would have a better chance.

I know mate, I was once NUT, then NASUWT, and nearly got royally fucked at one point with their lack of backing. I didn't mean to sound flippant there btw, I found the shop floor people really good, but the higher up the chain, the worse it got.

It said everything to me when one big hitter in NASUWT or NUT (can't remember which) ended up as deputy chief exec for one of the borough councils.

They are self serving and aren’t really arsed in the big picture. I’m glad I’m in a Union but wish it had real power, then again, no Union really has since the 80s.

Let’s hope these Doctors can bring about a culture shift in ours, I doubt it, but you never know

They're asking for their wages to have the same value they did in 2008. They're not asking for a pay rise in real terms.

If your response to that is "everyone's wages have done the same", that may be true, but they're doing something about it. Nothing stopping you unionising and making the same demands in your industry rather than calling them cheeky for not simply meekly accepting it.

Exactly this. Working in local government we have had a real term wage cut of around 20% since 2008. People made the mistake of meekly accepting year on year of pay freezes and then 0.5/1% pay rises to the point that we can't get a strike ballot over the line as everyone is too fucken skint to afford to strike.

Didn't do anything about it earlier and paying the cost now.

I've been on strike. Certainly not easy when you have a mortgage and kids. Even without, it's a struggle. Everything is so expensive in this country these days.

Playing devils advocate, would it have been better to ask for all the (big-chunk) wage rises you want in one go? Rather than keep coming back/reaching an agreement then striking?

I admit, I haven't looked at original demands and terms of first settlement, but I can sort of understand a frustration IF both parties sat down last year and negotiated a 20%+ increase and within a few months there is a request for another 20% on top of that. I could see how, if this wasn't on the agenda then, the government may feel like this is a little bit of bad faith.

(I appreciate there are a lot of leaps in those assumptions)

We did ask for full pay restoration in one go.

After labour got in, it felt like it was worth accepting the current offer and temporarily ending the dispute under the proviso that the new government would review our T&Cs and overhaul our annual pay review process.

We always said industrial action would restart if their response to this fell short. And it has.

This every fooking day - it shocks me to the core that every year we get a pay deal that is less than inflation, and everybody meekly accepts it.

Scandalous, and when it happens over several years, it really starts to bite, as every service and product we need to live seems to rise well above inflation.

They're asking for their wages to have the same value they did in 2008.

How would you go about doing that? Serious question as I've no idea if it's not via a pay rise.

I understand that the prices of just about everything are higher now. Of course I do.
My question - or misunderstanding - is how can you make their pay such that the equivalent of buying a mars bar today is the same as in 2008 unless you give them a pay rise.

In real terms is the key bit. It might involve more pay to achieve parity in value with what pay *should be worth* and *was worth* in 2008.

If you look on the BMA website, they have worked it all out - as they would have done - and done projections about how long it takes at different rates of pay rise to achieve parity with 2008 (assuming static inflation).
