Golf as a Spectator Sport

I mean actually on the course as opposed to TV.

It looks a bit shit to me. How much do actuary get to see? Particularly if you are a short arse. What happened to those periscope things that used to be very common at golf?

I went to an F1 race once. It was ace for about two laps. After that they get stung out and start pitting etc so you have no idea what’s going on. We ended up watching on the big screens and listening to the on course commentary with some complimentary headphones. It was shite. Expensive and shite.

I once got to attend a Honda classic in South Florida in a hospitality tent overlooking the 18th hole, open bar, waited on, courtesy of Lufthansa. (frequent flyer perk, chaps). No complaints.

Depends. I've been the Belfry for the British Masters a couple of times and it's not as busy as The Open for example. Following a group round is the best way to go about it, as long as it's not a group with the top names in. Trying to see Justin Rose who was the top name tee off from the first was nigh on impossible due to the amount of biffs dressed like Charlie Adam watching the Open. Followed a couple of groups for a few holes and it was sound. Only the odd few others with the same idea so got to see every shot up close. It's the following the ball once they've thwacked, yes THWACKED, it I struggled with.

The noise of them smacking the ball is incredible. Golf's shit like but being out in the open on a sunny day with a pint and seeing them up close makes you appreciate how good they are despite golf being, did I mention, shit.

I reckon all sport is better watching on the telly nowadays in terms of being able to see the actual action. Obviously always nice to be there for the day out and the experience.

I don’t think football is better on the tv. Defo cricket is, the only other sport I watch.

I think football is the best for being there in terms of seeing the bigger picture but I'm still seeking clarification on whether decisions were correct or not from those sniding it as I cant see.

Get a pretty good overall view in top balc but still parts I can't see. Sat in the park end a couple of times last year and struggled to have an idea of what was going on at the gwladys street end.

Need your eyes tested mate. I've had this from the Street End to the Park End the last few years. Took me birds glasses one game and everything was like it was in perfect HD. Seen some glorious misses by our star studded boys in blue.

I did get prescribed glasses and it helped. The only time I wear them and I usually forget them. Don't think it's the greatest view still and you see more on the box.

Much prefer being on the side and high as opposed to behind the goal too. Although nice when they are attacking your end (oo we)

I went to the senior open years ago with me cousin who’s a golf gimp. I really really enjoyed it and even tho these fellas were old, the way they strike the ball. It’s a different game they’re playing compared to most of us.

I went to The Open at Hoylake about 15 years ago. It was cloudy and overcast and was pretty rubbish. Players would twat the ball, you'd lose it's flight against the clouds, and then the players would walk off.

Or you'd be stood near a green and every so often a ball would land on it.

Well better watching it on telly.

Many of the twats that go to golf events are there to be seen on TV. They position themselves to be in the backdrop all the time and wear look at me outfits.

The fans who actually play the game are usually there to see a certain player live and will follow him for a few holes and hope to learn something from the way he plays the game.

I have attended a few big events over the years, but the behaviour of the uneducated gobshite's and their lack of respect for the players has finished me. It has become a shitshow and Americanised, my thinking now is go to the practice / pro-am days and enjoy the players without the gobshite fans trying to be seen on TV.

Hoylake has been the worst for that. Some of the gobshite behaviour on display has really pissed me off. Shouting out as the players hit the ball and getting bladdered amd acting up.

It's brilliant. You can basically get right up close to the action, particularly lesser known (but still boss) players on the Thursday or Friday. Obviously following Tiger or Rory on a Sunday is a nightmare, but it's otherwise really good.

We tend to get in the grandstand for the tee shot on the first for an hour first thing, then we'll just pick spots on tees, fairways or greens (close to bars and toilets if poss) at various holes throughout the day and watch groups come through. Some of the greens at Birkdale are ace cos you can pitch up on a dune and watch loads of approaches and putts unimpeded, even for the massive names.

In Hoylake in 2014 we basically got to stand in the middle of an argument between Jimenez and Bill Haas about whether a ball was embedded or not (which isn't even a rule here I don't think). Basically Miguel was (correctly in my view) calling out Haas for being a cheating bastard. Was hilarious - "BIIIILLL, THAT BALL IS NOT EMBEBBLED".

He was spot on but a shithouse ref let Haas have a free drop cos "a spectator probably stood on the ball" which was bollocks. The one and only time I've ever seen Jimenez fuming.

Same with live horse racing. Unless you go high up in the stand you are basically watching a bunch of horses fly past you for a brief couple of seconds every 30 minutes.

I've always thought top class golf would be pretty difficult to follow for those of us with less than brilliant eyesight too.

When I played (badly) I could never hit the ball far enough to lose sight of it, but when you were behind people on the tee who could belt a ball most of the time it was gone off into the distance before you could follow it. If you are watching top pros, belting the ball further than anyone you've ever seen then there's no chance of seeing it after it's left the tee surely?

It depends on the course. Birkdale is great because most of the holes are framed by large sand dunes, so you've almost got natural grandstands there to be able to get a good view from. There can be a lot of walking involved if you want to follow a particular group of players.

You can get really close to the action at times though, and only up close do you really appreciate how good these lads are. The power they generate is amazing to see.

The Amateur championship and Open Qualifying (free entry) are brilliant because you get to walk next to the players on the fairway and stand a couple of feet away as they're hitting.

Went to Birkdale on the Thursday last year and enjoyed it. I was thinking of trying to get tickets for next year. Crazy it’s now so popular there’s a ballot and you have to apply by the end of the month.
What’s the Wednesday like? I was thinking it may be less busy and more relaxed.

I like the first Sunday practice day. Much more chilled out, although a lot of the top players are at the Scottish Open that day. It gets gradually more busy as the week goes on with regard to practice days. Tuesday and Wednesday very similar really. Looking at the coverage of McIlroy yesterday, it seemed as busy as it is today on the first championship day.

Yeah that's the downside. It's offset a bit by the smaller crowd. Monday is when they all arrive really. I usually do two practice days and a championship day - Friday, by choice.

I've managed to win a couple of hospitality packages at Hoylake and they were sensational. Easily the best way to do it. Would have cost an absolute fortune if it had been paid for. The second one (my mate won it and took me as his guest) was in the big double decker patrons pavilion alongside the 18th fairway. We were in the Mastercard suite and it felt like dying and going to heaven. Best day of my life. Free everything in the best surroundings. Sipping Vintage Bollinger on the balcony and watching the golf through binoculars and enjoying top notch scran at your leisure. A one-off, dream experience.

Get to Open Qualifying or the Amateur Championship. It's at Hoylake and West Lancs next year respectively and is fantastic to watch up close. Open is at Birkdale next year too. The practice days are probably better for viewikg as the crowds aren't as big.

Yeah its obviously a better all round view on the box. I love being there in person though. I'm a proper golf nerd and really enjoy being around the game at that level.

I dont think the tv experience properly conveys how good they are. I remember watching Woods up close at Hoylake the year he won there, and was stood right by him hitting an iron on a par 3. You can literally feel the strike through your feet. The sound of the ball on the club is different. Hard to explain without being there and experiencing it really.

I've been to loads of Opens and followed Faldo round St Andrews for four days when he won in 1990 and Muirfield when won in 1992. Woukd have seen more on telly without doubt, but loved being there and seeing it myself.

Someone I know has been a club pro for years. His son is also a pro and he said better than most club pros but the Tour pros are different league.

It's essentially a different game they're playing. Standing close by as they strike the ball is awe-inspiring. The height and distance they hit it is incredible. The sound and the vibration of the ground, particularly in the firm links turf is a real experience.

Best way to watch golf is either following a specific game (can be hard to do at a packed event) or stay by a specific green or teeing area and catch most of the players through the day. You do obviously get a far more rounded view on the telly, but for golf lovers it's more about being amongst the elite and getting an appreciation of the incredible talent and quality they have. Anyone who thinks events like the majors and the Ryder Cup arent massively atmospheric events are way out of touch or just kidding themselves, whether they like the game or not.

I’ve been to a bit of motorsport many many years ago and was once sat in a stand at the first corner at brands hatch and there was a massive pile up and a wheel went bouncing over the stand and hit a hot dog van behind.

That was pretty fucking exciting.
