I've always had a hope that one day, a bunch of super wealthy people - I already realise the irony in this - who perhaps made their money from arts and culture, but still have their feet firmly on the ground, and who see what is happening with everything falling to bits around us - they club together to form a printed newspaper, available free like that Metro shite (owned by the Daily Mail Group lest we forget), employing proper investigative journalists (there must be so many disillusioned ones around who would jump at the opportunity) to cut through the shite and report on things from a true independent viewpoint, or at least offer something alternative and different.
The existence of Private Eye shows that you can deliver hard-hitting, dig-beneath-the-surface stories alongside humour and entertaining bits, and without it being completely impenetrable to the average joe - although they still have that whiff of establishment about them of course.
Pipe dream I know, but that's what I would love to see.
