I quite agree that something will need to change for that part of the ceremony because the world has changed so much in the last half century.
Perhaps the bishops would still pay homage because of the strong connections of the monarch with the church as played out throughout the ceremony.
The whole coronation ceremony collapses if the spiritual aspects are removed.
So when casting about for a replacement for the peers paying homage, I have imagined a few minutes of the crowds, gathered outside around huge TV screens, shouting their support for the monarch, along the lines of “Long live the …….”.
Do you think that would be workable?
