October 2024 Nielsen PPM Ratings

This is the eye of the hurricane. WLIT-FM 93.9 will skyrocket to #1 with all-Christmas music as they do each year.

WUSN is up 0.5.
WLJE a Class A station doing 1250 watts out of Valpo is pulling a 1.0 share and let's be honest, how many PPM's end up there as it barely clips IL and the Chicago South Side market?
WXLC & WCCQ are a combined 0.7, being beat by WLJE?
WCHI-FM-HD2 aka "Big 95.5" is at a 0.1, right behind WXLC 0.2! I have my popcorn ready for the next few months, after the WLIT fever subsides.

Country is on an upswing, but Alpha needs a signal in between XLC and CCQ to make a dent and have a chance at FREE Country. They do not have the pocket change to make that happen.

WLS-AM is down to a 1.3 in an election cycle. WBEZ was up to a 2.8

WBMX is down hanging out with B96. I really do not think the ground lost is to WLIT and jingle bells music, but more possibly WGCI which is up. Those 2 swap listeners.

WGCI is up 0.5 to a 2.9, WPWX is up 0.1 to 1.2, The Streets being blasted on 5 repeaters and WOJO-HD2 is at a 0.2 flat. I have no clue how they pay their monthly lease for those signals to all the signal owners let alone turn a profit. Still, I think we need some more Current Based Hip Hop stations in town!

I don't really look at the overall 6+ on the suburban stations.

They can narrow those down by county or region and they are usually much higher than the overall numbers for the market. When they're trying to sell ads to the local area, I'm guessing they use those numbers.

You missed the point Jeremy.

For a Valpo station to be pulling a 1 share, 2 months in a row, not covering 80% of the rated market indicates: a) Country is on an upswing again b) The FREE venture is not performing as it should be when it is positioning as a CHICAGO station, it is not marketing or selling as a rural Class A.

It is also not on a whim that the parent company of WLJE decided to resubscribe to the numbers. They dropped it a while ago.

They don't position it fully as a "Chicago" station. "Chicagoland" At least not in the imaging. They mention specific cities and regions outside of Chicago proper. Kenosha for example they frequently mention in 102.3's imaging. It's a full simulcast of music and airstaff, but the liners and stopsets are different.

I'm not really surprised the numbers, particularly with WXLC are not higher. That area is oversaturated with Country between WUSN, WMIL (Reaches northern Lake County) and WVTY, which does have listeners in that area. If you put Kenosha County into the mix, even moreso.

WCCQ seems to be performing very slightly better than before.

Their one promo they were running mentions they do not sit on the beach but you will find them @ Gene & Judes. - Which is suburban Chicago, a few miles from the city limits and the irony? You can't hear 102.3 or 98.3 there. Chicagoland means, average listener expects to hear it when tuning in. When they tune in to the all day long Ramsey show on 102.3 repeater, they bolt.

If you talk to anyone in Ottawa, they will tell you they are definitely not Chicagoland.

WCCQ was established so you are right the #'s seem to be better, they added people on. WXLC is still shock it is gone for longtime loyal listeners. The base of Country listeners in that are is also less than WCCQ.

Bottom line? If Alpha had dollars they could take on the 102.3 repeater and a few other signals and clump together something that can actually be heard in Chicago"land".

They called WXLC "For the Burbs" during the Star simulcast. WZSR still does.

I don't know about WZSR's coverage area, but I know Lake County generally doesn't like to consider themselves "The Burbs" Never heard that term there.

It's really just bad corporate programming decisions. Drew Walker and the local staff do a great job locally with what they have but some of these decisions really make no sense.

Alpha in other markets are just plugging in Westwood One. That would be a return to form for a lot of these signals, but they consider "Chicago" or "Waukegan-Kenosha" and "Joliet" to be too large I'm guessing.

They should have paired 102.3 with 95.9 and the Classic Alternative format instead. Less of a gap in the coverage and a different format for the area.
