What happens when CHR listener averages 65? What is the game plan at that time?

There was someone who posted once on WGXI-1420 when they were NOS, "I'm sick of listening to ads for funeral homes." Remember all the Oxy10 and Bactine ads?
Now the average age of a CHR listener is 40-plus. TALK are 60+.

When in the UP, NOBODY calls the radio station anymore. On Top40 WIFC Wausau, a few years ago, they gave a request line number, and the jock said "nobody calls anymore." Not voice tracked, but a HUMAN, LIVE DJ.... How far we've fallen or how "irrelevant" we are in a sea of AM FM streaming, YouTube, mp3s, etc.....

No one calls radio. It is a rarity. When you hear phoners on radio, they are produced in house (especially the insane, reality tv type ones), or are old recorded ones. If a station is lucky, people will interact via text or social media.

CHR has been 40+ for awhile. Milwaukee it's probably pushing 50. The CHR there sometimes plays Tag Team - Whoomp! (There It Is) and TLC - Creep without hesitation. Song is over 30 years old.

The point I was making was if I heard NO (PHONE) CALLS or a jock saying "nobody calls anymore" was...
IF I was advertiser, why would I advertise here? There's no action. I guess that was my point,
but still... :40 or 50 years old" for CHR!
This PROVES the numbers mean nothing and too,
a 6.5 rating in 2024 vs a 6.5 rating in 2014 or 2000 are completely different.

People not calling or being in their 40s is not really a problem for advertisers as long as people are listening. WIFC is a heritage station and a lot of people listen to it.

25-54 is target. WIFC has been an Adult-friendly CHR for years. They'll be fine as long as adults continue to listen, which obviously is not forever

Jeremy is not wrong. But begs the question, why even listen? Just the music? 20 - 25 minutes of commercial an hour? Or?

WIFC and it's sister station WIXX are still local radio. WIXX, at least until recently had a live jock on the air 24 hours a day. They're still doing for the most part what radio used to do. Connect with their community. They're basically the heritage CHRs in their market.

They both have competition, WIXX stiff competition with WKSZ since their longtime morning host retired and they brought on his co-hosts and another longtime WIXX jock for mornings. WIXX was getting double digit ratings until the morning show change

This is a "feels" like post, not an expert post. Feels like FM is going to be a classic/retro music format band as current music has moved almost exclusively to streaming services. Much like AM slowly died off when FM took off in the 70s/80s.

Eventually even the classic/retro FM band will die off as well as our age (53) group dies off in the future and go the way of AM. So terrestrial signals might become tall towers of nothing. That what it feels like unless someone can reinvent the wheel and do it well. Just a feeling.

It's pretty sad too, because before streaming, hearing a station ID...

Those were pretty cool IDs but now just relics of radio. I have agreed with Z all along. It's over.

Heard someone on a student run segment and she belted out :hey mom. I'm on the radio!"

Too, the news reporters on WBBM (new hires) all sound young. I remember a WBBM-AM alum saying "radio doesn't pay what it used to pay..."

While NOBODY I KNOW under 40 has a radio, I'm guess there still MUST be some interest in the medium, and yet the numbers above are quite scary.

Next thing, there'll be no more BETA-VHS tapes, analog TV, or reel to reel tapes!

Too, the HIGH SPOTLOAD has to have an effect on TV with 18 mins of commercial per hour.

Interesting stuff, and A)WYTZ is right and said this some time ago 2) I always thought WIXX was NOT Top40, but a lame HotAC. Packers pull their numbers up.

I read a report just a few days ago which states cassette tapes are making a comeback. I used to buy Maxell cassette tapes and Maxell reel-to-reel tapes by the case back in the day.

If this is true, the fidelity must really be improved to match today's technology.

I own a SONY boombox which has AM/FM, cassette and CD player. I have not used it in years. It has to be 30 years old and it's in great condition. The device is quite heavy. It sits on a shelf at home.
It still has the original antenna. I used to receive airport interference when I tuned it to WXRT-FM/93.1. No idea why. Someone here can tell me. I'm 20 minutes from Chicago.

I own a SONY Trinitron analog TV. This TV was bought back in 1989. It still plays perfectly. I rarely use it; however, old technology really holds up/stands the test of time.

These days, cheaper TVs are disposable. It's easier/less expensive to replace it. My two main TVs are identical 50-inch Sony HD-TVs. They serve me well.

Such a sad state for radio. iHeart layoffs round 300 about complete, and Cumulus following suit. I'm so relieved I didn't pursue my dream. I'd be so screwed, probably 10 times over if I would have started in 1993/1994. It's untelling how many jobs I would have lost between then and now. Same sad state with audio equipment. I have stacks of amps, disc players, turntables, couple boom boxes, etc. that I refuse to let go. I'm convinced that even some of the cheapest stuff made in the '80s/90s is of a higher quality than what's being pushed as "hi-res" gear now. Ok..done with the rambling rant! My apologies.

Amen on the terrestrial radio industry.

Cumulus raped their creditors and this country for bankruptcy and they are still inept while circumventing the laws by cutting loose hired help. Audacy will be playing the same card in the future.

It is not. It is nostalgia. Like vinyl records. If you have a Barnes & Nobles bookstore close by, drop in. There are vinyl albums being sold $20 - over $100, alongside turntables.

The Analog TV's are good for old school gaming (Atari 2600, Nintendo Original etc).

Hunter is correct though, the vintage hardware was much more better made. FM and AM receivers tuned more reliably, less noise, cleaner sounding audio and fidelity.
